Most of the editorial board for Third World Quarterly resigned over a piece of shit article that was rammed into publication by idiots looking at dollar signs and click-baiting over academic integrity. I read the article in question, which proclaimed to "make the case for colonialism." It was fucking atrocious. The article failed miserably based solely on depth of research and basic factual accuracy, two things it didn't have, never mind the fundamentally idiotic thesis.

Well, after some Googling I found the actual article:
http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10. ... 17.1369037

but it is behind a paywall. Is it available anywhere else? From the abstract:
For the last 100 years, Western colonialism has had a bad name. It is high time to question this orthodoxy. Western colonialism was, as a general rule, both objectively beneficial and subjectively legitimate in most of the places where it was found, using realistic measures of those concepts.

It truly does seem LOLwut (yeah, mass enslavement is really awesome!) but I'm really curious to see what it has to say in its entirety.

Dude who took the video is lucky to be alive. If I was him, I'd go get some lottery tickets.

Yeah, it is pay-walled unfortunately, cuz Taylor & Francis. The only way you could get access is through a University that pays for a Taylor & Francis subscription.

The article is pretty incredible. It reads like a satire, but it is real. It reeks of a conclusion in search of evidence, and the author didn't even cherry-pick evidence very well because he has an exceptionally poor understanding of the history of colonialism.

Interestingly enough, I read an article about Tanzania (formerly Deutsch-Ostafrika) where politicians and historians argued to not only see the negative effects of the colonial period. Apparently the German colonial rulers were responsible for the standardization and institutionalization of the now main language and had major influence in the creation of the modern education and healthcare systems. I don't know to what extend this is accurate though, as colonial history is not my area of study.
Try another signature of that kind and you'll get banned.

Lolol.

A rebuttal:
I suppose to those unfamiliar with the history, Gilley’s argument could appear superficially persuasive. But a moment’s examination of the record reveals why the case he makes is abhorrent. Gilley says he is simply asking for an unbiased assessment of the facts, that he just wants us to take off our ideological blinders and examine colonialism from an empirical perspective. But this is not what he has done. Instead, in his presentation of colonialism’s record, Gilley has deliberately excluded mention of every single atrocity committed by a colonial power. Instead of evaluating the colonial record empirically, he has distorted that record, concealing evidence of gross crimes against humanity. The result is not only unscholarly, but is morally tantamount to Holocaust denial.
