I've recently made an eastern block deck without specialization, and put in the standard Mot schutzen.
They feel really underwhelming for some reason.

I usually send 8 reservists and 6 MOT together, but the reservists always seem to survive a lot better while the schutzen die too quickly, even when reservists are located more at the front.

By the time 2 units of schutzen reduce from 20 to 5 or less, the reservists go from 30 to 24 or something along that line.

People claim they're OP but I really don't see how that's true. especially with 14AP on their rocket launchers.

Should I take the schutzen '90 instead? Or am I using them wrong?

My guess is you are using them wrong. You also do not need any reservists. Chances are the enemy just told his units to shoot at your mot schützen because he knows the reservists are no real threat.

Why would you play against AI and then wonder about the effectiveness of your deck...

Just to test how a few recon and tank units perform against their peers.

Great job ... and I'm not featured in it, so I'm even impressed! ;)
