Hepl ! The Battlegroup Manager is Broken! It doesn't work!

Postby The W:AB Noob » Sun 29 May 2016 02:20

Okay, first it's not broken. There's just a process that comes with it, as rogers did not really foresee a patch beyond 610 (and you can't blame him, there was no news of new maps or DLC's).

Instructions:
1. Go to the ZZ_Win that contains the latest battlegroup.dic, interface_outgame.dic, and unites.dic files (all of them). Currently, this is in 430000587\430000609, and probably will not change for some time.
2. Copy that into the place of the latest ZZ_Win.dat file, empty or not. Currently this is 510025133\510027397. Make sure to back up the original file in that folder.
3. Open the ZZ_Win that contains the latest interface_outgame.dic file. Others are optional. Currently, this is in 510019512\510024196. It is possible that the original file of step 2 might have this.
4. Raw extract the interface_outgame.dic file of the language that you want.
5. Open the ZZ_Win that contains the latest unites.dic file. Others are optional. Currently, this is in the original ZZ_Win.dat of 510025133\510027397. It is possible that the original file of step 2 might have this, as is the case currently.
6. Raw extract the unites.dic file of the language that you want.
7. Now take replace the interface_outgame.dic and unites.dic of the ZZ_Win.dat you pasted in step 2 with the extracted ones from step 3 and 6 respectively. Make sure to use the Raw Data Replace button and to select the right languages.

And now you're done. Have fun modding!

Explanation (for the modders who want to know why):
If you go to the BGM settings, it asks upfront what the paths of the unites.dic, battlegroup.dic, and interface_outgame.dic should be. Since there is only one ZZ_Win.dat file path to enter in, it assumes that the three files will be in the same ZZ_Win.dat file, which was the case back in patch 610. There are two ways to go about this: take the latest ZZ_Win.dat file and insert the additional files needed or take the latest ZZ_Win.dat file with the three required files and replace each with more current ones. I chose the latter because a lack of files in other languages could cause a crash.

Some people have reported that plainly pasting on the ZZ_Win.dat from 609 did not cause a crash, but left the Dutch units without names. This of course was the case, since Eugen had to create more Hashes for more names, and the old ZZ_Win.dat did not have those hashes. If you think about it, it's really pretty simple.

This then means that using the same process, you can use the BGM to modify campaigns of mods too, which is also possible. I taught Solbok this process a while back for Ash and Shadows, but never bothered to document it.

I've been trying to do this exact edit right now on the english .dic files you mention above, but for some reason, the button to Export is greyed out on the ZZ_Win.dat file in Wargame Modding Suite (and ONLY that one. I can open other .dat files). Any idea why?

Try closing all other tabs in the Modding Suite and reopening the ZZ_Win.dat. Otherwise, can you send a screenshot?

As you can see, several buttons are greyed out.

The Export button is the left most one which looks like a guy going into a trash bin. Then it will ask whether you want to export or replace, click export.

Wait. Aren't the first two steps supposed to happen after step six? The way it's written now, you're replacing a file with itself.

Ah, yeah, I worded it wrong.

Step 5 and 6 should be:
5. Open the ZZ_Win that contains the latest unites.dic file. Others are optional. Currently, this is the original ZZ_Win.dat from 510024744\510025133 (not the one we replaced it with). It is possible that the original file of step 2 might have this, as is the case currently.
6. Raw extract the unites.dic file of the language that you want.

HOWEVER:
Since Eugen released a new patch two days ago, step 2 and 5 currently are 510025133\510027397, not 510024744\510025133.

When updated, are you able to change the different BG's map pawn/model without causing a crash on load? Thats the big thing that puts me off from solely using the BGM as a modding tool for campaigns.

I never tried switching pawns, but I doubt it. This post was only for updating the ZZ_Win.dat's to be accepted into BGM in the first place and making the tool usable.
