The 'authentic' deck project

Postby Salamander7734 » Thu 6 Jun 2013 10:50

Introduction.
Recently I spent a few hours in an afternoon reconstructing the British 7th Armoured Brigade from 1983 with as much historical authenticity as I could. I enjoyed this quite a lot, being a bit of an armchair historian both the discoveries I made and the chance to see what it was like to command a full armoured brigade was quite fun. This thread is for the posting of similar decks, based on historical authenticity. They don't need to be 100% historically accurate as game mechanics can limit that quite a lot at times, and maybe you will want to change the composition slightly by swapping out a battalion or something.

I would also love it if we could get some games going between the various historical decks on this thread to pit two decks from basically the same time against each other instead of the random time-warp that most multiplayer decks seem to be xD

LOOKING FOR TESTERS FOR THIN RED LINE!

Missions:
Spoiler : The bridge at Oppdal :
The bridge at Oppdal
Introduction
In 1985 the Soviet Union and it's allies in the Warsaw Pact launch a devastating attack on Scandinavia. The British 7th Armoured Brigade, currently in Germany refitting it's old chieftain tanks to be replaced by new Challenger 1 tanks, is ordered to reclaim it's chieftains and set out for Scandinavia. They deploy as part of a new defensive line to stop the rampaging 153rd Guard tank regiment. They decide that in order to slow the advancing Soviet troops they should blow the bridge just north of their position. The Highlanders, supported by 2nd squadron of the 9th/12th lancers and No. 3 Troop, 2nd squadron of the Royal Scots dragoon guards dig in to protect the demolition charge, but are attacked by the 153rd Guard tank regiment before the bombs detonate. If the 153rd Guard tank regiment can take the bridge and defuse the charges then the British position becomes untenable and they are forced to retreat.

Image

Soviet objective.
Get at least one unit of infantry on the bridge for at least one minute, and the bombs are diffused.

British objective.
Hold the bridge until the bombs detonate.

Time limit.
30 mins. (That should be plenty of time to get units on the bridge)

Spoiler : Raid on the Fjord :
By BTR
Here is a preliminary "inf vs inf" scenario. 336th guards naval infantry brigade makes a landing down the coast and moves up the fjords securing four objectives.

Image
1. HQ residence
2/3/4. Oil installations

Against the 336th, is a british 5th Airborne Brigade already deployed in the town (five extra minutes to deploy in town after the vanilla countdown timer drops), with a single objective to keep the Soviets out of the town and the Oil installations intact.

Restrictions:
-45min time to complete the objectives
-Oil installations are under control only when there is garrisoned infantry in them and it is not shooting.
-Both sides want the oil, so shelling the installations is not an option.

Win conditions:
Soviet-
-Secure and hold at least two oil storage sites
-Casualty rate below 40% (will be calculated after the game)

Britain-
-Secure and hold at least two oil storage sites
-Casualty rate below 25% (will be calculated after the game)

Lose conditions:
Soviet-
-Less than two oil storage sites secured
-Loss objective 1 (HQ village)

Britain-
-Less than two oil storage sites secured
-Loss of free bridge travel

Spoiler : Breakthrough :
- Game settings:

By Soundwolf776

* Economy - to avoid 'flying numbers' and recon by bombing.
* Target goal is 6000pts, to avoid hitting the limit too early. Game is going to be decided by arbitrary conditions

- Battles start in 'set-up' phase after. Don't confuse it with normal deployment! 'Setup' is given for a defender to occupy defensive positions and for attacker to get some sectors so he can start amassing point advantage.
'Initial set-up' paragraph details how many and what kind of units are sides allowed to buy and use in that phase.
There are also deployment restrictions shown on the map - it's adviced to respect them, so that deployment would go without incidents. No fire of any sort, no artillery and aircraft missions are allowed until 'set-up' phase ends.

- Only after the 'set-up' phase ends, combat starts. Sides then are free to attack, fire artillery missions, bomb and do whatever they please to attain their goals.

- After the battle ends, sides should count how much points they've earned, count the difference between sides and check the result according to table:
0-1 point difference - draw
1-3 point difference - minor victory
4-5 point difference - major victory
more than 6 points difference - total victory

Scenario 1:
28 Tank Regiment of 20.Dywisja Pancerna of 1.Armia LWP (Poland) is capitalizing on a succesful breakthrough in Denmark. An advance guard of two reinforced tank battalions are tasked with brushing off Bundeswehr reserve mechanized battalion and securing the road for the rest of the regiment.
Polish divisional command is unaware that at this exact moment the HQ of 6th Panzergrenadier Division is massing forces for a counter-attack at that exact part of the front.

-2 vs 2:
2 PACT players - both use the deck '28 Tank Regiment'
2 NATO players - one uses KG "Waldau" (reservists) deck, second one - KG "Ulm" (counter-attacking battalion)

-Start points - 1000
-Time limit - 30 minutes

Initial set-up:
KG "Waldau" player may buy 14 combat units and 1 CV (command vehicle) at the start of the game.
KG "Ulm" evacuates his CV into forests until his group enters combat at a designated time.

PACT players may buy 2 CV each.

Set-up:
Set-up lasts for 3 minutes. At 03:00 normal combat may commence.
Here's the map of deployment borders.
Image

KG "Ulm" enter the game at 10:00 minutes mark. NATO players may decide to call in KG "Ulm" earlier but will suffer -1 victory point for every minute left until 10:00, partial minutes included.
Ex: calling "Ulm" at 7:39 would result in 3 points loss for NATO.

Goals:

PACT:
Secure sectors (+2 points for each sector occupied by the end of the game)
Occupy NATO starting sector (Alpha) (+5 points)
Inflict casualties - +1 point for every 20 destroyed NATO units.

NATO:
Secure sectors (+2 points for each sector occupied by the end of the game)
Hold your own starting sector (Alpha) (+3 points)
Inflict casualties - +1 point for every 20 destroyed PACT units.

Spoiler : The Thin Red Line :
The Thin Red Line (3v3)

By Salamander7734

Introduction.
The Soviet offensive through Scandinavia persists at speed, defeating the Norwegian and Swedish forces at every turn. The British, French and West Germans scramble to attempt to halt the collapse of their northern flank. The British 7th, 19th and 20th Brigades form a defensive position over watching a road designated route 107 by NATO command. As they attempt to dig in to their positions on two hills overlooking the strategically vital roads, three full Soviet units arrive. The 336th Naval Infantry brigade makes an amphibious landing behind them, cutting off the reinforcements for the trapped British units on the hills to the north. Can the British get through the 336th and reinforce their position? Or will the thin red line be broken by the mass of the red army?

Game mode: Siege
Game map: Ostersund
Starting points: 4000
Game time limit: 30-60 minutes (longer the game, easier for attacker)

Deployment Rules:
British: May deploy their point limit in Echo or Delta, but each player must deploy all his/her units in the same zone (e.g. player one could deploy all in echo and player two and three deploy in delta.)

Soviet:
- 336th may deploy any non command units in Bravo to cut off NATO reinforcements. Any other units can be deployed in either India or Foxtrot
- 371st may deploy all forces in either India or Foxtrot
- 153rd may deploy all their forces in either India or Foxtrot

Objectives:

The Soviets must attempt to take their three objectives, if by the end of the time limit two or more objectives are taken; Soviets are victorious. If not, the British have triumphed.

Taking objectives:
For an objective to count as taken it must be cleared of enemies and occupied by the attacking troops. The objectives consist of the villages in Golf and Charlie and the woods in Bravo that are circled on the map.

I hope I can find some other people who are interested :)
Anyway, thanks for reading.

Hi, would you be interested in an authentic objective based 1v1? I'll give you a selection of opponent "regiments" below, and if you want I'll PM you how they look (.rar doesn't seem to go through attaching process here)

336th Guard naval infantry brigade 1979
371st Guard Motor-rifle regiment 1986
45th Guard separate VDV regiment (Afghanistan) 1988
153rd Guard tank regiment 1985
23rd Guard separate Motor-rifle brigade 1987
20th Separate Recon brigate (SpN) 1985

How would the "objective work"?
1. We select a town/hill bridge or a combination whatever "land-mark" we think is important on the map
2. We have a time limit to complete the objective

Might I underline that W:ALB works best when placing under command of an individual player battlegroups that are the size of a company or battalion.

You will very likely run into significant hurdles if you try to bite off a whole brigade.

So for your example, let's take the uppermost echelon :

Armoured Division
- 3 x Armored Brigade
- 1 x Armored Battalion
- 2 x Mech Inf Battalion
- 1 x Artillery Brigade
- 1 x Engineer Battalion
- 1 x Air Defense Battalion
- 1 x Aviation Squadron

An actual battlegroup would see these assets devolved down to tactical level and grouped around either an Armored or Mech Inf Core.

- Tank/Mech Inf Battalion (3-4 stacks of 12x)
- Supporting Mech Inf/Tank Company (if the core is tank, support is infantry and vice-versa)
- Infantry or Vehicle-carried heavy weapons platoons (4 x ATGMs, etc) (3-4 platoons)
- Artillery Battalion (24 x tubes)
- Engineer Company (12 x AVREs)
- Air Defense Battery
- Aviation Detachment (8-12 Heloes)
- Recon, 1-2 Platoons (4x)

Air Assets, 1-2 planes of chosen type.

Normally only artillery and helicopters are a problem to field in any quantity. Anything else is easily obtainable if you limit yourself to a battalion task force.

Radum, this is a bit of an experiment to see what works and what doesn't xD anyway:

Anyway, BTR how about this (I decided since W:AB is loosely based off table top war gaming to inject a bit of table top imagination to the mission)

Soviet objective.
Get at least one unit of infantry on the bridge for at least one minute, and the bombs are diffused.

British objective.
Hold the bridge until the bombs detonate.

Time limit.
1 hour. (That should be plenty of time to get units on the bridge)

What do you think BTR?

Really interesting, I'd like to recreate realistic decks for France (and other countries). Where do you find this kind of information ?

Anyway, BTR how about this (I decided since W:AB is loosely based off table top war gaming to inject a bit of table top imagination to the mission)

Love it! Absolutely what Wargame needs! EUGEN HEARD THAT??
