I always liked the way Generals worked, because it was simple yet effective: Units would only attack non-defensive buildings if they were specifically ordered to, or if they were told to "guard" an area, in which case they'd attack everything in that vicinity. Otherwise, they'd only attack...

This is already a MAJOR improvement. The early game is nowhere near as sluggish and drawn out!
