Re: XinJiang: Current Issues

Harbin is pretty much on the opposite side of China geographically. I was born there but I have never noticed how Russian that place was. If you go downtown, I now notice that every other building, especially the older ones, have these round domes on top, and frequently with Russian engravings. Whe...

Re: 2015 General Election

I want to present a theoretical case that has been influenced by a real case, Austin or some other big Texan city. So we have a region where 5 seats are available. In the middle we have a big city that is a majority of the population, about 60% total. But because of Gerrymandering it has been cut up...

Re: 2015 General Election

The system you outline sounds like a horror show. I'd rather have my vote thrown out than be used without my knowledge or consent to help elect a candidate somewhere else I know nothing about, and I don't want the excess vote of someone in a different district being used to determine the outcome of...

Re: 2015 General Election

There's a growing movement to have independent bodies draw congressional districts, at least one state has already tried it but it's caught up in courts at the moment IIRC. The fundamental problem I have with proportional representation in the US is that with such a large country, you need represen...

Re: 2015 General Election

FPTP has problems but the more I think about it, I still prefer it to virtual/proportional representation. Especially in the US' case. First Past The Post can work. But it is very very prone to a sort of corruption. Because of the way it works the electoral districts need reworking very often, othe...

Re: 2015 General Election

Removal of FPTP also removes Gerrymandering to a great extent. And let's be honest, Gerrymandering is a blight upon democracy.

Well, only two things can kill Chuck Norris, Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee, and Bruce Lee is dead.

Re: 2015 General Election

Paddy Ashdown is going to eat a hat on TV. Sounds legit. It can happen. In Denmark one of the most vocal, and often most sharp political analysts for the largest television station, ended up eating a well prepared strawhat because of a similar statement ("I'll eat my hat if X party gets in nex...

Re: 2015 General Election

Personally that is my preferred option. SNP doesn't get inside the government, and manage to rip the country apart (because lets be honest if SNP does well governing we will see that silly election again soon, and having done well they might win that time). Similarly I don't trust either Milliband t...
