Millenium Challenge 2002

Postby DeuZerre » Sun 23 Dec 2012 20:52

Millennium Challenge 2002 (MC02) was a major war game exercise conducted by the United States armed forces in mid-2002, likely the largest such exercise in history.
It opposed "Blue team" (United states) and "Red team" (Unnamed middle easter nation).

What's funny is that the USA lost the first simulation, to... Spam. In particular, the use of suicide boats and overloading the enemy Anti-missile sytems, with estimated US losses approximating 20 000 men.

The Wargame was then restarted and both sides had to follow "Conventional" rules and some specific things were done so that "Red" team's positions were known by blue team. Of course, blue team won.

I would suggest that 'someone', 'somewhere', gave the 'common people' the impression that war can be fair and civilized.....

Yeah... Well, the good thing is that generally speaking leadership sucks in assymetrical warfare and you could say local leaders would be idiots fighting each other so the situation could go in "Blue" favour, without such a smart "Red" leader.

But eventually the US will lose some "Heavy tanks" to "MCLOS SPAM" followed by a "VAB RUSH".

Then they'll change strategies.

After the wargame was restarted, the war game was forced to follow a script drafted to ensure a Blue Force victory. Among the rules imposed by this script, Red Force was ordered to turn on all his anti-aircraft radar in order for them to be destroyed, and Red Force was not allowed to shoot down any of the aircraft bringing Blue Force troops ashore.[3] Van Riper also claimed that exercise officials denied him the opportunity to use his own tactics and ideas against Blue Force, and that they also ordered Red Force not to use certain weapons systems against Blue Force and even ordered that the location of Red Force units to be revealed

Military equipment is business, if your test proves that your planes and boats worth millions and billion can be defeated by small wooden boats loaded with TNT it's bad for business. And since some American presidents are weapons dealers... ;)

Yeah, but It's rather shocking, I feel, that instead of thinking about "What went wrong, let's change tactics" it went to "Plan B, everything goes well".

This kind of things would, I'd have hoped, made the staff change. It's retarded and dangerous.

Commanders lose all US Military Wargames by design, so they know what defeat is like, (since they can't get defeated by anyone else)
