Good Idea? WW2

Postby ShibbyDibby » Sun 9 Jun 2013 03:15

I know Airland Battle just came out, but I think a WW2 setting would be amazing for a future game. There are plenty of countries in the war with different vehicles/troops. Obviously there would be no helicopters but there are a TON of different planes. Any thoughts?

I think a WW2 Wargame could be a blast, but there are a lot of challenges to overcome as well. If there are answers to these, I'd love to see the devs put their labors into realizing a great World War 2 game.

1. What era would the game take place in? Early war (1940?) or Later War (1943?)
  • If early era, there could be serious balancing problems because there were few ways to counter tanks. Few if any dedicated Anti Tank weapons, virtually no LAW-type weapons. Also, close air support was somewhat primitive. Given this, tanks would probably dominate the battlefield completely, more so than they do in ALB which I don't think is a good thing. Also keep in mind that early WW2, the doctrines of most nations very much relied upon static defense - such as the Maginot Line. While in the post-WW2 era, fixed fortifications like trenches and static, defensive lines were largely discredited, these aspects were common place on World War 2 battlefields right up to the fall of Berlin.
  • If late era, then you run the risk of not having the French, which would be a shame (and likely cause Eugen, a French company, to be less likely to make the game). Though I suppose the French faction could just be Free French.

2. World War 2 was not an era of mechanized combat. The vast bulk of infantry (including Germany's!) were foot slogging infantry. Imagine playing ALB where most infantry come without APC's and need to walk everywhere they go. This could actually be interesting, with the decision to spend extra points on motorized infantry becoming a huge part of your strategy. That said, I'd be worried about the much slower pace of the game.

3. Again, consider about how powerful tanks would be. A World War 2 tank wasn't very different from a Cold War (i.e. ALB) tank in that it had a main gun, treads, and usually a machine gun. In ALB, to counter this threat, every infantry squad has a rocket launcher, we have access to close air support planes, helicopters, etc. with ATGM's. We also have infantry and vehicle-portable ATGM's. A lot of this stuff didn't exist in WW2.

4. Finally, a big question is just what would the factions be.
  • Obviously you'd have the Allies - America, Britain, and probably France in one form or another. I'd love to see Belgium, maybe Norway, and Canada included as minor nations much like the new ALB nations we got. But where do the Soviets fit? Having American riflemen, supported by British Spitfires, fighting alongside T-34 tanks would be incredibly odd. The Soviets almost need their own faction, and to include them as just another 'Allies Nation' would be difficult to see at best.
  • Then there's Axis - Germany, Italy. I'd love to see Romania, possibly Hungary, Bulgaria, Finland, Slovakia but I wouldn't hold out hope for any but possibly Romania. What about Japan? Again, seeing German Grenadiers calling in airstrikes from Japanese Zeros would be very difficult to imagine, though to my mind not as egregious as Allies fighting alongside Soviets, who were more co-belligerents than real allies.

And that's just off the top of my head. But maybe some people can provide interesting solutions, and perhaps persuade Eugen to give some serious thought to a WW2 Wargame.

Edit: And while it's true we have R.U.S.E. made by Eugen, I personally didn't like the game very much. It was too 'cartoony' and relied too much on the various 'Deceptions' (name of the game itself...) rather than actual battlefield tactics and such, but I admit I didn't give the game as much of a chance as I maybe should have.

I'd still much rather have a Wargame-style WW2 game. But since Eugen already did Ruse maybe they have some ideas and research left over to channel into a new game.

Me too.

I hope they push the timeframe for the next one to 1980-1990, just to see some cool new tech.
