Some of those Crimean "self defence units" are probably just Russian soldiers without insignia. They totally don't look like some quickly formed popular militia.

Anyway I don't really see Russia annexing Crimea, separatism is one thing but annexation of foreign territory completely other thing that is super rare nowadays. Russia didn't even annex South Ossetia.

Hopefully escalation can be avoided though.
