The problem is that we want to control Syria-Turkey border because this is where the local Syrian rebels get the support from. Due to our current inability to cost effectively get ground control of the area we resort to air strikes (as well as air strikes against rebel positions in the region in general).
I think the mode of operation should be to intercept, fire warning shots and/or push the aircraft out of the air space. In Turkish case it was rather impossible, as the violater, according to Turkish sources, was in Turkish airspace for 17 seconds. Source (authenticity was not yet verified):
That is, if the aircraft is not a threat to the country which in this case, as the trajectory suggests, it was not.
Why are you Russians surprised this happened anyways? NATO has tolerated Russian shenanigans with airspace violations for 60 years, but our patience is not inexhaustible. You can't really be surprised that the most aggressive and least stable NATO member whom doesn't like you at all and has a war on it's border is actually serious about defending it's airspace can you? That bombing right on Turkeys border against folks who are NOT related to ISIS at all and are very much Turkish proxies was going to just be ignored? Was the drone shootdown a few weeks back not enough to deter stupid flight plans?
I don't buy any of it. Russia knew exactly what it was doing, and dared the Turks to stop them. The Turks just dared, so now the balls in Putins court.
It's a tragedy sure, and the Turks are just as much asshats in the region as Russia, but Russia HAS repeatedly violated Turkish airspace over the past year, bombed people the Turkish government is friends with, and the Turks gave plenty of warning that they would fire on intruders if they kept violating Turkish airspace.

The reality is that due to Turkey controlling such an amount of Russian trade via the Black Sea during a deep-ish recession Turkey can hit Russia where it hurts. Think tariffs and added administrative costs for bulk carriers and other trade ships.
Or as one man who liked the pleasures of the flesh was noted saying. "It's the economy stupid."
And Russia can't even theoretically wage a war against Turkey. Even if no one retaliates with nukes you still bombed the seas that border half the world including yourself. To prove a point.

Hilarious. and so true. the last fashion power game on the international scene is to see until where one can push his hand without being catched and loose the bet.
That's the saddest part of the story. I was getting used to think, after nearly three decades of its existence, that the word "Strategy" was the main cornerstone of the RTS genre and golden age.

i prefer 156.8, its where all the freaks go. broken english fights between fishermen of rival nations, strange men proclaiming they are "filipino monkeys", people have sex with their mics keyed, its beautiful.

Know it with a frog :
The frog agrees to carry the scorpion in order to cross a river, saying in herself that the scorpion wouldn't sting her, otherwise the frog and the scorpion would sink. But the scorpion did it regardless of the consequences and both perished.
a relevant fable about human nature. hopefully here, all sides will realize that their common interests could suffer from such consequences.
"Calm and deescalation", NATO said.

Honestly, you can think whatever you want about Putin(I actually have a rather neutral to slightly positive view on him but that's definitely not the case for everybody) but what Erdolf ehhh Erdogan is doing is nothing but blatalantly provoking and supporting ISIS.
They know Russia is fighting ISIS, ISIS is maybe one of the worst thing post WW2. Honestly, the Russian jet might've been crossing Turkish air space but instead if turning a blind eye as they gight global terrorism they shoot the plane down that was in Turkish air space for less than 5 minutes...
