Sympathy for Units

Postby Excroat3 » Thu 2 Oct 2014 05:08

I just played a game where I was using I mech deck on Wonsan harbor, and I went from having 176 infantry squads (including support squads) to 7 recon squads and some CV infantry and AGTM infantry. I sent the rest of them (and their M113 transports) to their deaths. And I feel no remorse after sending 1,690+ troops to die horrible deaths in combat. Is this a bad thing? Do you guys feel bad when your soldiers die?

Sounds corny but sometimes in insane moments in a match, I think of how mind-bogglingly crazy the scene would have been at the Fulda Gap if things would have popped off.

Yeah, sometimes I zoom in very close and look at a field or a road littered with burned out hulks and imagine what it would feel like to drive through that, knowing that's what you are heading into.

Its basically an over exaggeration due to the compressed and ultimately gamey nature of Wargame. Similar to how you won't see a Lt Colonel in real life go:
"Driver Mechanic Ivanov! Drive down this highway in your BTR-80 and report enemy positions back to me ASAP!"
"Yes Tovarisch Colonel!"
*Drives BTR-80 up road.*
***ALERT!!! BTR-80 DESTROYED!!!***

Or...
"Captain Minorov! Send your company of T-72As down the road to kill that one M1A2 Abrams that HATO troops possess! FAST!!!!!!"
"Da Tovarisch!"
*Drives company of T-72As into frontal assault*
"Nasdarov Rodina!!!!!!"
***ALERT!!! T-72A DESTROYED!!!***
***ALERT!!! T-72A DESTROYED!!!***
***ALERT!!! T-72A DESTROYED!!!***
***ALERT!!! T-72A DESTROYED!!!***
***ALERT!!! T-72A DESTROYED!!!***
***ALERT!!! T-72A DESTROYED!!!***
***ALERT!!! T-72A DESTROYED!!!***
***ALERT!!! T-72A DESTROYED!!!***

Sometimes I get these moments where I will treat an infantry squad or tank as if they were real people, especially if they have performed very well.

This one time I had an SBS squad far behind enemy lines, killed a CV with them and a couple of APCs. The enemy brought out some infantry and mauled my now Elite SBS down to one man.

I sent a Lynx all the way round the map, through the mountains to rescue this single man who was being pursued by a bunch of whatever the Chinese line infantry is. I got him out of there and let him rest for the remainder of the game :D

I regually send in units to reinforce and evac squads deep behind enemy lines when they are in trouble escort the back to repair and rearm. Leave no man behind. I wish you could have downed pilots and crews from damaged armour in this game It would be great evacing them for a small points bonus.

I used to care in W:EE where I would heal/repair every squad/vehicle.

But stuff dies so fast now with planes that... Meh.

I felt this not in Wargame but in Darkest Hour, that WW1 spin off of Hearts of Iron, when a friend of mine under my advices launched an offensive in the Tyrol the 25th of december at 1AM, under a heavy snowfall.
I felt like Maréchal Joffre, sending his orders to the poor frontline soldiers while eating a piece of a marvellous strawberry cake...

Worst of it: the offensive did work with spectacular effects, triggering the capitulation of Austria and the opening of a new front in Bayern.

I dont care about lives of my men.I just dont send them to die in stupid suicide attacks like some players do because this isnt authentic. But i dont see a problem to use some units as cannon fodder to protect more important units. What i care about is the material, not the men.
How can anyone play to a faction's strength if the major flavour of that faction is overpriced units in every category?
