Let's compare cities

Postby StalkerDellaNote » Thu 20 Nov 2014 11:13

So I just wanna learn a little more about the cities my fellow Wargamers live in.. don't need specifics.. if you live in a big city or lie in county of one, I'm sure it's safe to say (Paris, London, New York)

share some stories, I wanna get a feel of what city life is like, because I'm moving to city, I'll share taste of my city for those of you who still think Los Angeles is the land of Sun and Celebrities..

Speaking of L.A, that's where I'm moving, leaving L.A. county Mojave desert for actual Los Angeles before the end of the month.. Yay!

so I can be close to my new job, school, and my endocrinologist.. I got a nice little studio in a gentrified part of town, it's super convenient, right around the corner from the subway station, cute little neighborhood filled with hipsters, crime rate is low..

buuttt I can't stand the homelessness in L.A., the smell, the moisture.. none of that.. I mean, I like the public transpo system, L.A. Metro is my business.. buses everywhere, and subway gets me where I wanna go if I'm going to the Hollywood or Burbank.. but the city is filthy, like the "nice" parts are often more filthy than the projects here in my current town.. at least here I know the guy that's gonna rob me, and I can probably win a knife fight here, but L.A.? Oh my..

Average Experience when arriving to LA by train
Spoiler : :
Shoot.. if you take a train into Union Station, you get to see all of our beautiful gang affiliated art work caked on to the walls of the L.A. River, followed by some of the most run down, authentic projects.. when you get off.. Union Station on the inside is actually nice, but say you want a French Dip, how bout one of the oldest restaurants in town, Phillipes, be careful though, step foot out the front door, and you'll be drowning in homeless people until you get to Phillipes.. if you're a back pocket wallet guy, switch it up for this walk.. When you leave Phillipes, you'll understand why these people are homeless.. everything is OP, including the $4 ATM fee.. no wonder they're broke.. "Man, after all this stress I could sure use a cigarette" you say to yourself.. So you go stand in this 20 person line at this gas station that's no larger than a shipping container for a $12 disposable vapor cigarette, because you're doing as the Angelinos do..

please share.. I wanna learn about your real cities.. none of the tourist type stuff I read..

It's loud, dangerous, and the neighbors suck here, all the houses are ancient and the streets are old and poorly maintainted.

I have a huge problem with my neighbors playing loud annoying music all day, not to mention those douche bags who ride motorcycles around with no mufflers trying to make as much nose and be as annoying as possible.

LoL, Sounds like my current town though :)
Just change a few things to fit the scene..

It's loud (cause Air Force don't sleep), dangerous, and the neighbors suck here, all the houses are whatever and the streets are new-ish but seem old because so poorly maintainted.

I have a huge problem with my neighbors playing loud annoying mariachi music all day, not to mention those douche bags who drive hondas around with giant exhaust trying to make as much noise and be as annoying as possible.

I live in Houston, inside Beltway 8 but outside 610.

The city is nice and active, and there are some nice places to go Downtown. It's very spacious (I visited NYC earlier this year and it like I was being suffocated by cars and pedestrians, their streets are tiny and the hotel rooms are minuscule) and as such there's a lot of ground you can cover with a general absence of pedestrians as it's fairly impractical to walk anywhere farther than the local grocery or cafe.

There are certain less developed sections (like right outside UofH) that are rather rundown in appearance but in general the city is fairly nice looking.

People are usually rather polite (there still are people with short tempers but you don't really come into contact with strangers long enough to notice) on the street and while driving. The traffic is normally light but gets downright evil during rush hour, especially if there's been an accident because people take way too long staring at the wreck rather than moving on.

There's plenty of modern art pieces all over the inner parts of the city and interesting monument-like constructions.

We get some limited military aviation. Just last week an AH-64 flew over me for example. :D

The weather is mild due to our proximity to the Gulf, and it's generally comfortable to go outside in Spring and Fall but Summer is a good time to cook yourself if you aren't careful.

Toronto
- Weather is okay, there are 3 seasons in our city
Winter
Road Constructions/Repairs
Summer

Road constructions take forever, you see 5 workers, 1 is just standing there, another one is drinking Tims, the third is trying to make sure the traffic doesnt hit them(like we will when we are driving 20kmph!), and two people are slowly working .
Its like they dont notice they are blocking the road lane and there is a huge traffic jam behind them....
the public transport is pathetic, so a lot of people just drive. TTC (or subway/bus) is by the government, every year they charge your more by 10 cents, saying the service will improve and shit. But yea right... service just goes worse, even a bus driver told me the company is lying, there are more bus services on paper only

Food is meh here...

Only good thing is skiing lol

Macau SAR
Super super rich city... the government treasury can give each macau citizen 4million MOP(macau currency). thats around 500k USD
every year they give each citizen about 1k USD, 50 USD free medical ontop of the free healthcare(so you can get braces or whatever), 500USD on extra education on top of the 15 year free education. Although in USD looks little, the money is a lot for macau citizen when our stuff is much cheaper there.

Waaay too much casinos... like in 300m radius around my home, i have 4 casinos from 3 to 5 stars...
People are okay, lots of mainlanders (people from PRC) flooding our city to consume
undermanned city, yes, since we are servicing like 29 million tourist every year in a 600k population city (highest density city in the world)
every restaurant/company/whatever is hiring.. you really cannot not find a job there lol
they are hiring lots of mainlanders to come and work too but its still not enough

Food is amazing there, i always want to go back to gorge myself in portuguese/macau food

Public transport is improving, we are making a bridge to HK and Zhuhai, will be the longest bridge in the world iirc..
besides, you could walk everywhere in 4-5 hours... we are a small city, in toronto, you cant do that....
