Creationism

Postby Mad22 » Sun 23 Nov 2014 18:03

I was recently rather shocked to find that some states in America are teaching creationism as an alternative to evolution in schools. It surprised me given the theoretical secular nature of American government.

How/why/what do you feel about that American forum warriors?

Creationism is best understood as a cultural phenomenon, not really a scientific issue. It is more likely to be evangelical Christians defending their culture against a hostile anti-religious elite culture.

And really, you just found this out? It has been a standard slander against the fly-over states (and the United States) for the past two decades.

This is a whole new kettle of fish and just even attempting to explain it could make the entire situation worse given my neutral positioning.

No, that isn't really true. It is a modern phenomenon brought on about by the hostility between fundamentalists and elite scientific culture. If scientists weren't totally hostile to religion, or certain religious sects did not define themselves by this contrast to scientific culture, then there wouldn't be a problem.

In that sense, creationism is a product of this modern unenlightened time.

We argued about this in private and I won.

What a gargantuan overstatement. Scientists aren't hostile to religion, a few celebrity popular science figures are hostile to religion because it makes neckbeards buy their book, watch their videos, and upvote their AMAs.
