Personally, it is my favourite Total War actually. I just love the "downfall of Rome" depressing feel. They add a lot of new mechanics that make the campaign map far more interesting. That and most of the factions aren't really playing a traditional Total War game where you build a giant empire. Only a few are trying to do that. Most are focused on sacking, raiding, or in the case of the Roman factions, surviving. Then you have the Huns laying waste to all in their path. The battles are a lot of fun too. Keep in mind that I don't have any nostalgic feelings for Medieval II or Rome. I find most Total War fans are too busy metaphorically sucking those two games' dicks to give any credit to newer ones that, in my view, are infinitely better.

I've been playing the German cruiser line. Königsberg and Nürnberg was good, but now I'm at the Yorck and the carry potential is basically nil. I do fine in it damage wise but it doesn't really let you do enough in time to affect the outcome of games. The big culprit here is the atrocious velocity on the AP ammo that makes it useless above 8km. You can hit with HE but you won't do much damage, especially to cruisers compared to say Pensacola.

I heard that Admiral Hipster is good though. So maybe you would get better luck there. On related note - Kutuzov works well, if you act as a supporting cruiser for some BB with weak AA (ie Amagi or Tirpitz).
