After watching most of Violet Evergarden, I don't know what the appeal is.
It's supposed to be a story about a character 1) coming back to a normal life after a war and 2) discovering the human emotions she never got to experience.
But it seems like the scenarists forgot that there are other emotions in life than pain, sadness, sorrow and grief. If I were a veteran going through THAT, I'd begin to think that it would had been better if I died during the war or if it never stopped, because you will suffer anyways but in war you don't have too much to think about life and to realise things.
It started great, looked gorgeous, had its couple of awesome moments, but then it turned into tear porn. So, my wife and I stopped watching, and we re-binged Girls und Panzer before getting the OVA to wash it down.

I would like to recommend Princess Principal.

It is a steampunk thriller set in Victorian Not-England, which has been split in two after a revolution: the remains of the Kingdom, and the Commonwealth created after the proletariat revolted.
