No one uses T-72's (Even me)

Postby wekwek_noob » Wed 28 Mar 2012 16:03

Well I dont use my T-72's but I went in a match and some 1 made alot of t-72's I thought it will be a push over but it wasn't my army was wrecked even though it composed of m1a1 abrams, leopards and others :/

So why does ppl dont use T-72's besides its very terrible accuracy? (But it has very good damage)

I use the base T-72 in the front of my armor column, backed up by T-55AM's on the flanks and T-55AMV-1's behind, plus AA and ATGM jeeps. The T-72 has good armor for its price, so I use it as a walking shot absorber. Weapon accuracy becomes less important thanks to the other tanks backing it up, plus volume of fire.
T-72B is overpriced for what it does for me, so I don't bother with it.

T-72 has very good armor, AP power, speed, and range for its price. Only downside is really just that the accuracy is poor. I always back up my T-72s with a couple T-80s. T-72 attract enemy fire and contribute their firepower especially if my enemy decides to charge into close range while T-80 do most of the killing.

T72s are so innacurate tht you MUST buy 2 of them for each effective tank you wanted to have in field.

That means they are at most, stopgaps.

I suppose the T-72B price nerf made them seem overpriced and people took them off their decks, because T-64 and T-80 are more attractive for the high-end.

The T-72B would still be marginally useful, I occasionally use them though the other lines are generally better. The base T-72 is not a bad roadblock for its price. Perhaps T-72s would be well suited for forested maps where engagement ranges are short.

I haven't unlocked the T-80 yet; so I use the T-72 variants extensively. I tend to favor mobile warfare so the T-72 was initially attractive with it's speed and operational range. Their poor accuracy is problematic but I don't rely on them for damage; I support them with other vehicles with more accurate weapons. I'm more interested in A: having a tough unit to draw fire or B: using their speed and operational range to flank/chase.

I really need to unlock the T-80 but I have been focused on filling out my NATO deck for the past couple dozen stars.

You have summarised well the advantages of the T-72. The B version would be very good if it wasn't overpriced.

I find a bit odd that so many people say they do not use certain units for damage. THe only units that have usage other than damage are supply, recon and transports. All others ONLY and exclusive role is damage of some sort (even if only supression fire).. That makes th t72 not very effective. If you want to just draw fire. t34s / t55 can do that as well with such number advantage that armor becomes irrelevant.

T72 really need 1 more point of accuracy on each version.

Against mid-tier NATO tank that has around 6-7 AP power, T-72 can take up to 10 hits while T-55 and T-34 will die in 2. 15x5=65 while T-72 only cost 45 points, so in certain scenarios T72 can actually soak up more fire for the same cost. Another key advantage T-72 has is that it has 2 roof armor, making it near immune to 150mm howitzer.
T-55 and T-34 also have trouble penetrating armor/do significant damage to the more heavily armored tanks such as MBT-70 or Leopard 4/5. Faster speed also allows T-72 keep up with the tanks that they are suppose to protect as well.

Basic T-72s, both the authentic Russian models and the "Monkey Models" the East German have I think have the most armor (and reasonable speed) for their cost. They are inaccurate, but so are most basic model tanks. They're still reasonably accurate at close range. You can also return fire with them on heavier armored tanks at longer range than T-55/T-62s due to their higher AP value instead of seeing all the "Insufficient" values.

I do dislike the fact there is no smooth transitional model for T-72 compared to the other PACT tank series. You go from fairly cheap to "ZOMG, why do I want to buy this?" T-72B...
