Cannot do anything without someone complaining about it

Postby umiman » Fri 13 Apr 2012 02:56

I love this game. I consider it the best RTS I've ever played. But the community is really starting to drive me nuts. And it's not newbies either, but rather all the "veterans" at level 60, 70, 80, etc. who complain about EVERYTHING in game that I do.

Why? Do these people play so much that when someone doesn't adhere to their specific unspoken rules their balls break and they go into a huge tirade about how I'm a noob or a failure or a candidate for abortion. And no, I don't even get flamed when I'm doing badly. It's when I win that the endless flaming begins.

Just today I have been flamed (again, only when I'm winning) for.:
1. Attacking my enemy when I'm obviously "supposed to defend".
2. Buying artillery to kill my enemy's artillery because " you scared to attack me so you need to use artillery you ."
3. Using Marder VTS1s.
4. Using infantry. "get some skill noob. rushers can't play for "
5. Using MLRS. "read the patchnotes noob. Most useless unit in the game and you use them against me go play your stupid COD"
6. Playing on the new maps. "you only won cause you chose this map and got 4000 extra points"

I can go on, but I think you get the idea. And no, I'm not even making these up; I wouldn't even have imagined these were "noobtactics" but apparently they are.

Makes me want to only play with low level newbies. Because there in every game I get a nice "gg" at the end instead of a lecture on why my mom is a giant or why I need to grow hair on my .

tl;dr: Can we get a reporting feature, a way to put notes on enemy players for others to see ("This player loves to complain"), or the ability to mute players?

Was this in a ranked match? If not, that's a first.

In other very famous online RTS games, players insult their opponents to demoralize them and maybe piss them off to a point where they don't play well. As strange as this might sound, high ranked players in SC2 practice the technique.

It's been mentioned a ton of times before though, little can be done about trash talking.

*I played a game where somebody 'forgot to mention' that it was a 'no-arty' game (several minutes into the match) and then complained about my artillery use. I played another 1v1 where as soon as I started playing, the other guy started ranting about artillery spammers and asked me 'what sort of cheat' I was using, I just happened to be using a single MLRS in that game and when I fired it he instantly ragequit.

*I occasionally get angry low-ranked people in ranked 1v1's who accuse me of being unfair somehow by beating them, despite the matching system being beyond my control.

*A guy rushed me with an infantry swarm, then accused me of rushing when I sent some units around the flank to kill his command vehicle. I'm also accused of rushing on a fairly regular basis, when really I just noticed a weakness early on and decided to take advantage of it. Early aggression is just one of many tools in my tool box.

There's also the forums we're on where every manner of gameplay that somebody doesn't like is habitually described as exploitative rather than just their opponent playing a certain way and half the units in the game (or more) have been described as OP at some point. It's tied up with the scrub attitude that everybody should play 'balanced' armies where everybody brings a little bit of everything to fight the other guy's little bit of everything. When people talk about realism they often actually mean this rather than true historical accuracy.

There's the eternal quitters who are constantly making forum posts declaring that they've quit the game and yet they hang around whining, including some people on my (large) friends list who have made posts declaring that they will no longer play until x or y is fixed, but I log on the day after to find their level has mysteriously increased.

When historians and cultural critics look back upon the important Internet community of Wargame in their books and documentaries, they will say it was the best of communities, it was the worst of communities.

There's your mistake. Level isn't an indicator of skill, elo is. A 5 year old could get to lvl 80 if he played enough.

This is one reason why I have not entered a multiplayer game yet. I assume I will instantly be scolded for not knowing the ins and outs of the game as they do if I even get a chance after they see I'm level one.

So long as you're not a willful idiot (like the guys who fire uncorrected MLRS barrages all damn day) you won't take much abuse in multi as you wade in. I've had several games with low lvl no-elo-ranking players who did pretty well, worked with the team, and fulfilled their roles admirably.

You generally don't start taking grief until you get good at murdering people.

There is often a few "low level only" games available ; However, try to avoid the 6000pts ones.

yeah, just join a noob game and you'll be fine (but as above, avoid the 6000pt games).

I get very little aggro (like one or two instances after 130+ hours of play) in Multiplayer games but perhaps its because i avoid ranked and just stick with Custom. Ranked is a different beast :p As soon as people play ranked they change IMO...they'll do anything to win and will be way more likely to flame after a loss, regardless of how you defeated them.
