Who'd like to see more CAS assets?

Postby Agiel7 » Mon 16 Apr 2012 12:28

While introducing more aircraft as part of Close Air Support duties into the game does push it into WiC territory, a Cold War gone hot in Central Europe doesn't feel complete without Hawgs lighting columns of trucks and BMPs ablaze with their GAU-8s and Soviet Su-25s returning the favour on NATO positions. Perhaps an expansion pack will introduce them?

For the A-10 it could come in a few flavours:

GAU-8: Effective against infantry, light-skinned vehicles, and lightly-armoured vehicles. GAU-8 effective only when targeting rear-armour for heavier tanks.

CBU-87: Effective vs. infantry, light-skinned vehicles, and lightly-amoured vehicles. Dispersal height can be adjusted. Wider coverage also means less damage to units in the dispersal radius.

Mk. 20 Rockeye: Cluster effective against groups of older-generation Pact heavy armour. Deals reduced but still considerable damage against later generation Soviet tanks.

Maverick: Four individual targets are painted for destruction by AGM-65s.

No thanks, the game isn't large enough for Fixed wing cas.

Rotary CAS is more than suffieciant.

Yeah, me too I feel the game is missing something without CAS or BAI assets.

These aircraft, or even fighter bombers like the F-16 (Block 1 to 20) or the MiG-27, would be great in the game, but would need to be introduced like the tactical aids in World in Conflict but without the same destructive power.

It would need to have a miss probability, a reasonable chance to be shot down (lower probability on an individual shot but with a higher line-of-sight to give a longer engagement range for long-range SAMs), and a cooldown on the ability to call in air support based on supplies/deployment points and whether the previous strike was shot down. The aircraft should also be given a rough outline, such as engaging any armored vehicle in the area, unless you're specifically calling for CAS support and you'd need to see the target to designate it. The delay between calling air support and the moment they arrive in the area should also be more significant than in WiC.

Hmmm... one would have to sacrifice slot for CAS... and if it would be expensive like 200 points or something... maybe...

It's for developers to decide...

Spoiler:

Division or even Army level assets such as the SA-11 medium-range SAM system are kinda out of place for a game fought at the battalion/regiment level. If one wants these systems to have a true purpose in the game, one needs to include the units they're intended to deal with.

Maybe, but they'd probably need quite a lot of work to be fun. Obviously you can't have them stay on the board as units you control, the map is simply too small. Using them as off-map strikes is a definite maybe. I think the fear is CAS becoming another Finger of God squishing CPs and other assets with impunity.

Fixed wing CAS feature list:

- individual targeting with occasional friendly fire if the strike is called too close to friendlies
- huge targeting circles if the strike is not spotted
- one pass per ordered strike
- vulnerable to SAMs and radar-guided AA
- delay between ordering the strike and it actually happening has to be thought out carefully. Can't be too fast, can't be too slow.
- some sort of prioritizing between targets. This'd almost certainly have to be based on the attackers capabilities.

Seems like a lot of work. Maybe an expansion pack?

I'd prefer seeing air forces as off-map interdiction forces. Units arrive on the battlefield damaged, with some ammo and supplies spent. Occasionally an unit fails to show up completely (in which case you get the points back, but lose the unit from your reserves). This is probably even more work than implementing some sort of CAS.

Even bigger spoiler:

This is a computer game.
