But the Soviets already have the Kurils, they occupied them after WW2; same with the southern half of Sakhalin (or as the Japanese called it Karafuto); ownership of both is a very complicated a messy story. What about inverse; Japan using force to try and regain them?

Only if the Soviets would be distracted by someone else (China/Europe). Otherwise poking a bear with a stick might end badly for them.

Also, their forces are called Self Defense for a reason. Using Japanese military offensively would require change of constitution afaik or something. Don't quote me on that though.

Eh, I think the US/Korea as a side would be far more varied and a ton more fun with all the new toys the two nations will be picking up, compared to NK that in all realms of prediction, won't be all that far off from most PACT countries when it comes to equipment. Hell, throw in Chinese intervention and it becomes one hell of a trial for US/SK.

The fact that North Korea has lower quality equipment than the US is exactly why it's fun to play. You have to outwit your opponent, not just doing M1A2 frontal assaults. Either a replay of the 1950 scenario or a SK offensive would be both interesting.

North Korean deployment is actually much more defensive than you think. Their infantry is in the foward echelon, while their armored divisions are in reserve. Their plan is mostly to contain an offensive while pounding the ennemy with all their artillery and the armored divisions and mechanised infantry would counter attack in crucial points. Their numerous special forces are optimal for launching guerrilla attacks and sabotage missions.

I'd like to see Japan romp China (again)...That would be a great scenario.

Good for you. Too bad this game is set after WWII.

Unfortunately scenarios have been announced to have predetermined sides and I really can't see Eugene putting in the effort to mirror the campaign on a different side.

China becomes critically short of supplies to support it's growing economy and population. It decides to forcibly take all of the disputed territories in the South China Sea and their rich strategic reserves but knows it will face stiff international resistance. In an attempt to distract the US it goads NK into invading South Korea at the same time it launches preemptive attacks on US bases in Guam, the Philippines, and Japan.

An intresing one could be based of tom clancy's endwar novel? where the Russians invade British Columbia and Canadian and US forces have to evict them before they get a foothold.

Why would they do that? Like if there aren't enough ressources in Russia.

because it would stop the flow of oil from the trans Alaska pipeline causing an oil crisis in the USA crippling them not to mention throw them off guard.

And why would they want to attack the US? The Cold War is over and nukes are nasty.
