Yeah, the altitude interface is terribad. It's only one button which is telling nothing. Change altitude - from what to what? High to low or the other way? I cant tell without zooming in.

If Eugen only changed the button for a slider.

It works too with cluster or iron bombs instead of arty ;-) Don´t know about napalm.

In ALB it was possible with cluster and iron bombs, arty didn´t worked that well, I think it managed to stun/panick them, but not to do any damage.

Not for helis at max altitude, which is the point of this thread.
A brilliant plan from the dirtiest euro-hippie: get US players to pay me for a game that I then show them how much their military sucks so I can feel better about being a communist.

Of course for heli at high altitude too.
There was a lull with WAB as arty was de-powered, but huge explosions (and iron bombs and cluster bombs and napalm) always were pretty good at killing helicopters, lurking high or low.

I used in WAB multiplayer to put some arty fire on enemy heli massed on ground or at low level and to kill/stun them
in WRD skirmish I placed some heli (gunship/transport with rockets) over woods and river as a defense line and AI started to target them and kill with arty, which is not normal

As I stated before, this is perfect.

High altitude hovering helicopters has been an exploit all ALB and finally there is a counter to it.

Hovering your helos high altitude unharmed was a broken game mechanic anyway.

- no fuel consumption
- no need to move them (immune to everything)
- perfect defense, especially on hills or at own frontline, yes, just everywhere

Now in Red Dragon:

- you cant use your helos as magic tower defense anymore
- you have to move them/use them as reserve/fast reaction forces (as it should be IMO)
- you will have to take their fuel into consideration, because you have to move them

So in short: Artillery (only 7 HE+ Artillery btw) damaging High Altitude Helicopter is one of the view things that really improved inRed Dragon.

Edit: still I agree that high altitude should be default for helos and it should be easier to figure out if they are high or low alt.
Also see my thread about the dead old ATGM Helo bug ...

Edit2:

Did u ever wonder why helicopters did not land on the WTC in 2001 to save people from the upper floors or roof?

This has happened to me as well but I think it might actually be a terrain issue instead of a Arty issue, because I have seen Planes and Helis clipping through terrain like mountains or small cliffs.

Which possibly means the altitudes on some maps are not registering properly with air units, therefore they do not fly at the correct altitude.

e.g.

Terrain altitude above sea level = 10m
Heli altitude should be = x + 10m (x being a constant value)

This is a bug, without a doubt. Test it yourself (with accurate arty, preferably).

Fire pos on a helicopter's unit card and the arty will fire directly on the helicopter. Even if the arty misses, the shells will not continue to hit the ground and will instead disappear near the helicopter.
