Most OP and Controversial unit in Wargame history IYO

Postby Mako » Fri 10 Oct 2014 08:11

Now if you didn't think "Patriot" good job, please comment in this thread.. if you did, I guess you can mention it, as long as you post your runner up and do not make this a Patriot thread.

For OP for me it's gotta be the RD Beta Smerch, it got the point where one person with a support deck could ruin the game singlehandedly.

It basically just fired a shotgun of Nighthawk bombs anywhere on the map, and was uncounterable, it killed literally everything in a sector at the press of a button

Controversial would be the Ninja, since from my understanding it's just out of timeframe and included because someone thought it was cool.

So I thought that other thread actually had some potential for good discussion, unfortunately it took a wrong turn into "getting locked and poster getting banned" town right at the start, but I think it's worth having.

Controversial =/= OP by the way, they're two different things, hardly anyone supported the Beta Smerch, but it was undeniably OP. Similarly, the Chimra was really not very OP and had a minimal impact on gameplay, but was intensely controversial.
If there's two kinds of players, those that like challenges and those that want a fair game, pubstomps should make everyone happy.

OP: Beta Smerch or early ALB Nighthawk

Controversial: Chimera, that was a firestorm that even Patriot threads can't live up to

Controversial: LAV-AD or the lack Thereof

Most OP: Beta (i think) FSJ-90... only way to kill it was mass bombing raids or Smerches, and even then they were probably sector hopping away, and eating Spetz for lunch.

Most OP is a tossup between Nighthawk in early ALB and Fallschirms 90 in beta/early RD. EE was a surprisingly balanced game.

Most controversial - probably Rafale and EF, in my mind, since they are both so clearly OOTF.

what?

I mostly play against comps where everything is OP.

RD Controversials: The stupid Ka-52. First flight in in '97, SEAD missiles it's not even really cleared for (to my understanding), and the only nation that has a SEAD missile cleared on a helicopter in the time frame doesn't get it. Much more controversial than the Ninja IMO because that is a fairly realistic addition to an otherwise lacking coalition (would not get an exceptional chopper or an AA chopper otherwise)

The stupid Il-102, it lost to the Su-25 for good reason. I would much rather have the Su-34 or one of its prototypes in it's place.

The Burantino, because it has been controversial in Every. Single. Game. Its either 'too powerful' or 'overpriced', never balanced... I don't think I've seen a time where the majority of people here are happy with its balance.

Runner up has to be the T-80U in ALB... so much NATO tears over its superior design of glorious Socialism.
Tied with the T-80U though has to be the early-ALB Reagan mobile. I'd like to say people were overreacting, but given there was a period in which I lost 1 Nighthawk over the course of about twenty games playing as the US, maybe not...

The supreme winner is Beta/early WEE Burratino, it killed EVERYTHING within its radius, it had a range of around 5000 and super killy ammo, instantkilled many turtled forests.

And for the most controversial unit i think i will have to go for the MG-3 as it have spawned a large number of threads and debates.
