Generate maps at the start of each match

Postby Armageddon » Fri 28 Oct 2016 01:07

Now, it seems to me, a wargame conquest match is more or less about reaching the key spots of a map, e.g. chokepoints or important roads or well positioned buildings, as quickly as possible and then controlling it. After a while, the gameplay becomes the same thing over and over again.

To take the game to the next level, let me suggest, maps be procedurally generated in real time, at the start of a match. And I don't mean simply the location and size of the sectors. That would be good too - and easier of course. What I mean is, generate the terrain, the hills, the forests, the roads and the buildings procedurally, so that in theory no two matches ever take place on the same map.

The map could be generated on the computer of the host player at the start of a match and then propagated to the other player or players.

this falls under "hardware and programming limitation."

with a voxel based engine or a game designed around prefrabicated terrain chunks that connect seamlessly this could work though.

No procedurally generated terrain please. Works horribly for games like this as map balance becomes a tossup.

You can't expect the developers to completely reprogram a majorly complex and heavily established aspect of 2 year old game. RTS games can thrive on carefully planned map design, randomly generated environments would be too hard to make balanced. It's not a bad idea for a new game with different game play mechanics, but not wargame.

Alternatively, Eugen might introduce a new map, every now and again, say 1 per week or fortnight, and simultaneously retire 1 old map. This might have a similar effect to the game play. Not as impressive as a new map every match. But perhaps more doable.

No? Single maps take a long time to make, what purpose would this serve?

While I agree that randomly generated maps would be very difficult both practically and balance wise to implement, I agree with the sentiment of we need new maps. I am pretty tired of playing the same 5 or 6 maps that are actually good and rolling the dice super hard on the ones that aren't. A new map every now and then would be greatly appreciated, it would help even more if there were a map builder, because then the community could do most of the work for that.

Wow, procedural generation in the IRISZOOM engine? Not sure it's possible, but it's always fun to dream of what might be. Given what we've heard from the devs here and there over the years, it sounds like making maps for the Wargame series is a fairly involved process. Not confident that procgen would do us any favors in map design or layout.

I'm going to throw in my vote for a few more new RD maps.

Only aspect that makes me hesitate to push for them is if Wargame 4 (if it exists) would evolve map design and elements enough to make RD maps incompatible. This would continue the dynamic we've seen with EE, ALB and RD; maps from one aren't easily transferred to the other. If there's a new Wargame coming to us sometime in the future, I'd rather have more maps for THAT 8-)

I agree with the need for new maps. Red Dragon players often seem to specialize on a few maps for hundreds of games...newer 'random' players don't have the slightest chance afterwards.

It's getting too specialized out here. Shake up these games, bring new life into them, challenge the long-time routine plays.
