I think it's just evidence that Cold War Gone Hot and World War 2 are two separate audiences. I wonder if we'd see a similar split if Wargame decided to eschew the Cold War in favor of a Modern setting.

Them AoA feelings. Will that in any way shape or form change their mind on what to do next?

Cold War supreme. Timeframe and most wargame mechanics are just golden mean. Wargame IV will come.

Going from the Cold War to now isn't the jump from WW2 to the Cold War is, so I'd suspect not really.

Technological disparity between nation-states would encourage an AoA/C&CG style of asymmetry, unless the focus was on advisers and special operators with proxies (NATO-Ukraine v RF-Donbass, GCC-Yemen v IRI-Houthi, RF/IRI-Syria v NATO/Israel-FSA, etc etc).

Although Modern Day got 47% of the vote for preferred WG4 setting, that's still not 50%.

What I think that most wargamers really want is just the current cold war time-frame and setting, but improved in terms of depth, gameplay and balance.

Lots you could do really. Better modeling of countermeasures (separate radar and IR ECM), top attack weapons, better city fighting mechanics, add EW-operators who can detect enemy presence, model various weapons properly such as glide-bombs.

SD, DLCs (-Netherlands, somewhat Reds), AoA.
There's little to inspire trust in any possible "improvement", at least without significant community involvement.

Well, at this point Steel Division seems to have performed same as AoA (circa 100K sold), which is actually a bit worrying for Eugen as a company :(
