Patch 117426 - Teleportation fix

Postby [EUG]MadMat » Mon 1 Jun 2020 15:37

This patch will fix the teleporting infantry exploit, yet for PC users only.

We can't support Mac & Linux anymore: we have long ceased to operate compatibility processes with those OS on our more recent games, and the effort required to bring them back would be too high.

Therefore, Mac & Linux versions will remain at the current 64564 version.

So as a mac user I can't play Wargame online anymore due to a different game version?

You still can play multiplayer, but you will only meet other Mac or Linux users, still at v64564 too.

Frankly, as a wargame player for years since pretty much the beginning I feel kinda screwed over, especially since support is being dropped for something as minor as a bug that has been around for ages.

I've been playing with friends regularily for quite some time, most of which do use the game on windows and I'm rather dissappointed by this development.

Will you guys offer any solution or similar for people in my situation in the future?

In all honesty everyone needs to drop MacOS or Apple in general, Apple has put themselves in their own closed off environment and it has only caused compatibility issues for everyone. I don't blame the devs for no longer wanting to support or develop the game for MacOS. It is unreasonable for Apple to force people to buy an overpriced Apple Machine in order to develop things for Mac.

If you'd like to continue playing with your friends you can most likely pick up a Windows PC that has far higher specifications than your current machine for a fraction of the price of your current machine.

Which for a game with such a small and dedicated playerbase is equivalent to being locked out.

Really, I can understand stopping the Linux & Mac compatibility processes as a business decision, but You must be aware that separating the minority platforms in a so multiplayer-focussed game with a small and dedicated playerbase effectively means breaking the game for all players on these platforms. Especially since also some Windows players suffer from this patch if they can't play with some friends anymore.

Is a fix for such a small bug really worth that? Please consider reverting the patch.

En tant que joueur en Linux, je suis déçu.

I couldn't agree more with this.

At first I was excited seeing that Eugen is apparently dedicated to keeping Wargame alive by realeasing a patch, but at the same time showing that it isn't by dropping support for an in my humble opinion not insignificant minority.

Si vous pourrais revisiter votre decision je serais trés reconaissant.

We are fixing the exploit, which was being reported to us as gamebreaking, for the largest part of the community, while the others can still play the game as before in solo, skirmish and multi, although among a smaller playerbase.

There won't be a better "solution". The only alternative was to leave the exploit for everybody.

So we can still play wargame with the gamebreaking bug inbetween mac and linux users or just solo and skirmish.
I have a solution if I may offer:
Judging from that there is no plan to release a patch for mac and linux how about realeasing one that only changes the game version so we can still play online with our friends instead of just locking us out? No idea if it would work, but I don't see why not, it certainly beats locking out part of your playerbase from online games.

Sure, mac and linux users could use the exploit (which even with the replay I can't figure out how to do) and that was only used in a few ranked games by a few people anyway as far as I found out. (And we would be able to use it anyway because there is no patch for mac or linux planned anyway). I played quite frequently online and I've never even encountered this bug so I can't imagine it being widespread knowledge how to do at this point. And if it really does become a widespread problem you could still lock us out later.

I'm pretty sure that's impoosible. In the best case, this will only cause desync between players, which already breaks any game.

Another possibility: If it is only the compatibility process and the changes are in not strongly platform-specific code, release the patch via the steam beta-program for Mac&Linux without the testing. Or make the update a beta for windows so they can choose which version to run.
