Indeed China seems to be doing a great work, and moreover I also like some of their ideas about export weapons.

For example it seems that China is the only country to produce small size cheap planes like the JF-17 or it's predecessor the J-7, which is very clever as many countries can't always buy big planes and most western and russian producers now only make big planes like the Rafale.

Moreover the new light tank and the VT-4 are also a good way of providing modern yet affordable equipment that is more practical logistically for mountainous countries with bad infrastructure singe the VT-4 is essentially a successor to the quite light Type-85/96 series.

Besides, I also heard that China was building 2 or 3 new aircraft carriers that are going to give a huge boost to the chinese naval power, even if their existing aging carrier was removed from service in a few years.

So it looks quite cool. I wonder if China is going to reduce the size of it's military as it's quality increases. You don't really need 2 million men to kick ass in the world nowadays if the need arises.

China has decided to reduce its army, but steadily increase its navy and marine. But overall a reduction in number if i remember correctly

China knew there is no point to go against the estabilished powers in arms trade, and hence went the "bang for your buck" route. Pakistan especially was a reliable customer and truth to be told, it was Pakistan who saved the whole ZTZ-85 line by purchasing them which later led to ZTZ-96. It was due to those sales that many arms manufacturers could survive long enough for "the military needs to wait" be semi-lifted and purchase orders to roll in.

Currently there are 2 carriers in planning. One has finished hull construction and is expected to be in water and outfitting this year. that one is kinda a practice piece after the experience gained with the Liaoning. The second one will feature a catapult without ski-ramp, rumored to be electromagnetic and with nuclear power.

The overall personal downsizing began in the late 70s, there has being many rounds since then. The stronger emphasis on quality of units began in the 90s, which is scheduled to be stepwise introduced to all military commands. The last downsizing happend last year, a reduction of 300k IIRC.

I think the rumours are saying EMALS and steam, 80k metric tons, 40-50 aircrafts. A major theme that has resurfaced is that PLAN has figured out some way to lower the power requirements for EM launching (reportedly by using DC power rather than coupled AC, but I don’t know the precise designs).

Apparantly China is testing a railgun on a ship

However this may just be a fancy water gun for oil tanker fire fighting. ;)

im frankly impressed how fast china is catching up in the surface fleet game. I really hope its an actual rail gun.
Btw, is there any plan to make a new frigate design. Type54a has been here for a long time

It was a surprise for pretty much everybody, this literally came out of nowhere. Anyway, as usual patience and waiting for something more substantial appears.

Currently there is no frigate planned, the 054A is damn new. Most efforts would prolly be focused on 055 and the carrier.

I thought the design has been almost a decade already and yet we are still making them

Ships have generally a higher "design life expectancy" for lack of better words. They may be 12 years old now, but with better equipment they will do fine. I mean the Sovremenny is being upgraded, and that ship is ancient now.

New litoral ships are also being commisioned as we speak, i think PLAN is fine equipment wise. It is the army who is on a begging streak, comparatively speaking.

New pics of the railgun, and the probability of it actually being a railgun is rather high. Unless this is a very sophisticated smokescreen. ;)
