[MOD] [New] Vinz Overhaul - balance mod (WIP)

Postby vinz75 » Sat 25 Sep 2021 00:13

Hello,

I am working on a mod to overhaul the units based on the stats seen in DLC nations.
The mod has several goals:
1 - upgrade units that are vastly underpowered even for their time period.
2 - Make the stats more believable (not realistic, because it still has to work for the game)
4 - Improve unit usability, but keep the original balance and flavor of vanilla Wargame RD
3 - Try and get enough support from forum players, so that the mod can be proposed to Eugen as a balance patch

I have already created a large balance mod in the past (viewtopic.php?f=187&t=60013&p=1035246&hilit=give+underpowered+units+a+chance#p1035246) so I can make this one happen (I'm not dreaming something I can't do).

The actual mod work will happen after the South Africa nation pack and it's attached balance patch.

First topic in next post is not a sexy one... It is FUEL !

Hello,

Ok, so in game many units have a small range. I see two categories:
1 - Unit that have no good reason to have a short range: think Buffalo iV APC, Wiesel, Bkan etc...
2 - Units where range is used for balance as it prevents using the cheap units as Zerglings: M18, Sturmi, Ontos etc...
But in that case the units should be refueled for a decent fuel amount. Example a 250km M36 (15pts) needs a 800L truck to refuel :o

So the change will be either increase range and / or decrease fuel tank

Some fuel tanks have been enlarged to reflect greater range. I have done that when the tank size / range ratio was good (ex: Ferret)
Here, Isarealis units based on sherman chassis retained low autonomy due to iSherman. The fuel tank has been reduced for easier refueling

Redfor for next post

All in all redfor units have less autonomy problems. Soviet engineering of course :D

Let me know what you think. Will these change ease your life ?

Thank you ;)

P.S: Next subject is bigger and cooler: The main canons stats (excluding autocanons and recoilless rifles)

Hello, I finished going through all the data for main tank guns... that's a lot :o

So for tank guns I have decided to analyze through two axis: Time and caliber.

For time I have created 4 categories each separated by a technical breakthrough (I have also kept Wargame era for reference as it is important gameplay wise)
1 - before 1960 (before modern kinetic penetrators)
2 - between 1960 and 1975 (before smoothbore guns becomes the norm)
3 - between 1976 and 1989 (before the unicorns ;) )
4 - 1990 and after

First the 75 an 76 mm guns before 1960
below is the list of planned changes

A quick work on each unit:
the reference point will be the su-76M as USSR units tend to be more consistent in my opinion.
These are the remarks from the information I have found

SU76M: A 76mm gun from 1941 (more recent than the one from T-34 /76). Not able to penetrate panther frontally, not alble to penetrate tiger from front and sides --> OK

M41A1: reported to have penetrated T-34/85 tank --> OK

M24: same ballistics as sherman 75 gun. It has low AP but good HE --> HE artificially boosted to give it a flavor. low rate of fire prevent it to be broken. Slight AP increase so that it can take out APC.

M18 / SO76: Sherman 76 gun, reported to kills panthers and tigers. --> AP superior to su-76M

Sturmi: Same gun as panzer IV can destroy T-34. The version delivered to finland had the high velocity 7,5cm gun. --> Due to no new ammunition after the war same AP as Su-76M

PT-76 Desant: reported both as not very powerful and also as having penetrated an M60. --> In doubt I leave it as it is.

FV601: Not much of a real reason here except that until the early 60's the shaped charges (HEAT) rounds were the most effective projectile. Hence the creation of AMX-30 and leopard 1 where armor was deemed useless. --> AP equals M18

As a general rule I will try not nerfing units.

let me know your thoughts :)

Hello,

Let's talk about pre 1960 84-90 mm guns

GUN_90_1959.png

Basically Centurions and M48 got a boost in AP or range so that these tanks become more dangerous to IFV's
Those buffs also reflect the fact that these guns proved effective against sub T-55 armor grade.

For 100-105 mm guns no big changes except IKV 103 big HEAT projectile

And we are done with pre 1960 era guns.

Hello,

Here are the changes to gun from 1976 to 1980
for 73-76 mm guns
- no change (only variants of UK scorpion gun and USSR BMP gun)

for 85 - 90 mm guns

V150 90 damage is exaggerated but this will make for an more interesting vehicle.

For 100-105 mm guns

M48A5 were fitted with contemporary M60 RISE gun and ammunition

For 115-152 mm guns

The AMX-32 is a very rare example of nerf. In its current state, it is by far the best 120mm gun of its time... for no reason
In the french deck AMX-32 and AMX-30B2 Brennus will swap role.

P.S: the last patch does not break my proposed changes, but the IFV armor buff leads me to thinking to buff M48A1 and M47 Patton from 8 to 9 AP so that they stay relevant as a threat to IFV. it would then have a gun with the same power as the Centurion 84mm which is technically not true.
Same thing with the AMX-13 Harpoon going from AP 7 to AP 8

Enjoy

Hello,

Now the guns from 1981 to 1985

Note ERA are coded with letters
Era A = before 1980
Era B = from 1981 to 1985
Era C = 1986 to 1995

changes for 73 to 90 mm guns

Changes for 100 to 115 mm guns

many older tank designs have been given more modern ammunition to remain somehow relevant.

No change for 120-125 mm guns

Bye :D

And finally SA guns: no changes needed.
Note the 1985 era Centurion / Olifant has 2275m range that compensate the max range AP of only 13
