Tearing Down The Wall: Wargame 1987

June 12, 1987 - Ronald Reagan issues the challenge "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

In November 1987 a plot by reactionary members of the Communist Party and high ranking military officials comes to fruition in the USSR that sees Mikhail Gorbachev removed from power. The new junta quickly acts to revert their predecessors reforms and suppress any dissent over the changeover of power. Two weeks later the arrest of East German dissident Konrad Eisenberg by the Stasi, along with persistent economic problems leads to spontaneous protests across the Soviet satellite, particularly in East Berlin. Soviet troops are deployed to restore order by the fragile new government through force, but in doing so stray shots are made across the Berlin Wall. These escalated into skirmishes that soon led to the entirety of the Inner-German-Border being inflamed. It seems the Wall will be torn down...by force.

One thing that strikes me about Wargame Red Dragon, enjoyable though it is, is that due to the increase in timeframe it doesn't really feel like a Cold War game. As the UK you use Challenger 2s supported by Stormers and AS-90s, as the USSR Mi-28s covering T-90s and BTR-Ts, France sees Rafales and Ceasers supporting Leclercs.

Tearing Down The Wall aims to put Wargame squarely back into the realms of a cold war standoff. To accomplish this post 1987 units and prototypes will be removed (you fight with the army you've got, not the one you want) and Cat C will be set back at 1975, and a more complete roster of in-service units will be added for the 1975-1987 timeframe. Of course balance will be redone to fit the new timeframe too. National or coalition decks will be mandatory, and deck specialisations based on reality will be implemented.

Obviously I can't start work proper on the mod proper until we have a stable version of RD, but you can help me out by saying if there's any introduction date inaccuracies in the armoury and suggesting new units. (no prototypes or post '87 though of course)

YF-22? ;)

Seriously though, nice idea.
A brilliant plan from the dirtiest euro-hippie: get US players to pay me for a game that I then show them how much their military sucks so I can feel better about being a communist.

So, in our Wargame modding community, we have Wargame: 1984, Wargame 1954, and now Wargame 1987.

Time for me to announce a Wargame: 1991 mod!

Well if you count that, the With Destiny should be 1990

Now I'm moving from the plane redo to Wargame 1987, thought I'd start posting about some of the features you're going to see in Tearing Down The Wall.

Think I have a good planned setup for LMG balance, actual RoF variation will be significantly reduced. Max accuracy DPM has been changed so it varies from 0.65 to 1. So the M60 is now not so massively poorer than the MG3 (though it is still worse). This should mean a more level playing field, but without the monotomy of standardisation. I also plan to introduce distinct LMG classes, and seperate [CQC] and firing on the move. So now some rifles (eg the PKM) will be able to fire on the move but won't grant [CQC].

Firstly there's rifle converts. These have high accuracy both stationary and on the move, short range, and a rather low rate of fire and suppression. In game we have:
-L86
-RPK
-Type 81
-RPD

LMG converts and light LMGs. These are mostly standard LMGs with minimal changes to make them CQC or are light enough to be carried on the move. Prettymuch a straight upgrade from the [STAT] LMGs they have the same range and RoF as their regular counterparts but gain minimal accuracy on the move. Some of these won't have [CQC].
-AA-52
-l.MG3
-62L Shiki
-M60E3
-M60 "shorty"
-PKM
-Uk vz. 59
-Type 73
-KSP m/58B

Dedicated SAWs are designs actually build for CQC combat, generally more modern. They combine both decent accuracy on the move and stationary with higher rates of fire. They do have the lower range and suppression of their rifle convert counterparts though.
-Minimi
-K3 LMG
-Stoner 63
-Bren L4
-Colt LMG

Anything not mentioned would be your standard stationary LMG. High accuracy, high RoF, good range but no stabs or [CQC].

Notice there's some factional variation here, Pact has almost entirely LMGs capable of firing on the move, however they also rely on rifle converts. Whereas NATO fields dedicated SAWs, a mixture of [STAT] and light LMGs, with only a single rifle convert. A prototype of these changes for you guys to try out should be out soon.

Wargame, with units from the Cold War? Absolutely preposterous! :D

Anyway I love the idea of this, we will have to make do with what we have. Balancing is nicer too, no need to make outdated vehicles competitive with modern tanks!
Hoping for a better next-gen Wargame and new engine in a few years...
One can dream ;_;

This sounds cool, it will hopefully give RD the cold war atmosphere back.
