Game Scales

Postby Pyro » Tue 9 Sep 2014 02:20

I have uploaded a four page pdf that describes the relationship between two important scales “Map Scale” and “Speed Scale” and one derived variable “Fake Factor” in the Wargame: Airland Battle computer game.

The same relationships are highly likely to occur in other related games in the Wargame: franchise, such as Red Dragon.

Speed scale, fake factor and map scale are closely related by formula. The formula may be rearranged so that any two of the variables can determine the third.

This will be interest to anyone who wishes to modify the scales to provide a step closer to reality. It is also of interest to anyone wondering why the various distances and speeds are entered into the database using weird factors such as "74.285714", e.g., distance data in game units is equal to the real word distance multiplied by 74.285714. There is a logic behind the numbers which has been determined mathematically and checked by experiment.

Update 9 Sep: revised step 7 formula. Added step 8 time conversion.
Update 10 Sep: finally cracked the significance of the constant in blue.
Update 13 Dec 2015: online storage changed and link fixed
Update 13 Dec 2015(2): file updated to show both Red Dragon and Airland Battle settings

I have no clue what you're talking about, partly because you need to edit the share settings of the Google document. In W:AB, there was a multiplier that times all ranges that show up on a computer screen by 3.5. In W:RD, this is not in the same place it used to be in, so we don't know how to change it yet.

But get ready to change thousands of other values if you tweak this one :( It doesnt auto-adjust existing stuff, just uses a different means of display.

Had an epiphany, and finally cracked the significance of the constant in blue - it seems so obvious now. It is the conversion between km/h and m/s. I have updated the pdf and changed the link in the original posting to point to the new document.

I consider this to be now pretty solid.

Updated document, new link in first post. Changed formula for acceleration.

Stupid, stupid, stupid - disregard this latest update, I was right the first time. If you downloaded the doc in the last 12 hours or so, then please do so again - it reverts back to the way it was previously.

It's only acceleration that was affected, which is really a very minor issue anyway. All fixed now.

Dang, I thought someone said back in W:RD beta that it didn't exist anymore.

What do you mean by that Guggy? Doesn't it change all output display numbers? Is there more to change?

Yes, it changes all output numbers displayed. It does not affect any numbers stored in the database.
