True Cold War (v1.4) - SweetFX preset (updated)

Postby silverhaze » Fri 12 Dec 2014 15:50

True Cold War is the name of the SweetFX 1.5.1 preset i'm currently working on for W:RD.
UPDATE : v1.4

(re-Uploaded on Mediafire.com)

Read the ' INSTALLATION_readme_first.txt ' for detailed Installation instructions
(compatible with both Beta and Base version)

Note: Sorry unfortunates Windows 8 owners, the current package is planned for Windows 7, but you can still try this Windows 8 SweetFX tutorial you will then need to use 'Radeon Pro' free software to make SweetFX working under Windows 8. I do not own win 8 so for now i stick with my Win 7 installation method, but any feedback about Windows 8 would be welcome!

Spoiler : Installation instruction for Win 7 :
  • If you use regular game (=no Beta DLC3):
Unzip all files in the archive in:
    ..\STEAM\SteamApps\common\Wargame Red Dragon\
  • If you use BETA DLC 3:
Unzip all files in the archive in both locations :
    ..\STEAM\SteamApps\common\Wargame Red Dragon\Beta\
    ..\STEAM\SteamApps\common\Wargame Red Dragon\Base\

This is because SweetFX files always have to be copied aside Wargame3.exe, and the DLC 3 Beta launcher is using alternates copies of Wargame3.exe to allow users to switch from DLC 3 to Base game.
Spoiler : How to capture screenshots properly, as default steam doesnt show SweetFX ? :
Darkmil wrote:Press print screen and it Will create a screenshot in the folder where Wargame3.exe is.
SweetFX's used filters:
  • LumaSharpen
  • Cineon DPX
  • LiftGammaGain
  • ToneMap
  • Vibrance
  • Curves
Spoiler : How to customize Sharpening ? :
Its a feature that can be disable. Personaly i prefer with it, but its customisable, or can be turned on/off very easily:
- To completly turn it OFF, open SweetFX_settings.txt and look for this line: #define USE_LUMASHARPEN 1
and switch "1" to "0".
- If you just want to tweak the value of the sharpening, then look for this line: #define sharp_strength 0.60 and play with the value.
Spoiler : How to customize Contrast ? :
First, open SweetFX_settings.txt. It is possible to customize the contrast but its a little bit complicated as it depend of several values. At first, you can look for #define Curves_contrast 0.18 and adjust the value.
There is others values that affect contrasts but then we go into something deep and it will take you way much longer to adjust. One of these is LiftGammaGain values but then it will be way more complex to adjust, as there is 9 different values, one for each Color (RGB) and one set for each tone (Dark / Medium / Light). Look for that line for shadows fine tuning : #define RGB_Lift

As you can see, I'm trying to find a mix of Realistic / Cold / Movies oriented visual.
The constraint is that this render must work for the armory but also for maps, which however not really have the same lighting.

Good to hear, thanks a lot :P

I've worked on refine tunning those days :geek: , to find the correct balance between armoury and ingame maps lightnings, because its easy to make it better in armoury with saturation.
But it wasn't easy to prevent map's colors destruction while ingame with keeping the same amount of saturation that makes the armoury looks fine.
Here is the last attempt so far :

Now I'm more satisfied by results, so i can think about a first release for Win 7 lucky owners (install is very easy for win 7).

Sorry Win 8 owners, you'll have to wait a bit for a detailed install instruction by myself, OR you can google it for SweetFX win 8 tutorials to make it work via 'Radeon Pro' (even if you have an nVidia card).

This looks pretty good, although I have to say that the sharpening might be a tad too pronounced. The far ground on the second screenshot looks pretty aliased as a result. I'll try to lower it on my end when I get around trying it. ;)

Is the model supposed to be that dark? Because the blacks looks almost crushed:

SweetFX is nothing new, Silverhaze just created settings that fits quite well with Wargame. I remember that I used it with Metro Last Light as well as Dark Souls II, and it existed even before that.

Here's a database of SweetFX settings for different games:
