Community event/campaign: Operation Lyngen

Postby orcbuster » Sat 7 Feb 2015 03:36

DUE TO TIMING ISSUES I'VE DECIDED TO MOVE THIS EVENT TO NEXT WEEKEND.

Seeing as there has been some interest in historical what-if scenarios. I'd like to at least try to do something similar with a subject I've learned quite a lot about. The defense of indre Troms.

SCENARIO

Summer 1990: tension regarding the Norwegian-Soviet maritime border escalates. After failed negotiations regarding fishing and oil drilling concessions along the established "Gray zone" after the Treholt scandal, both nations step up their maritime patrols along the border. Soviet Fishing vessels start openly ignoring the restrictions set upon them by the 1978 agreement and the Norwegian Navy finds itself having to escort vessels back across the border with increased frequency.

march 1991: reports about Soviet military forces being spotted at Svalbard sparks a diplomatic crisis. The Soviets claim the island as their sovereign territory in order to reinforce their grip north of the arctic circle.

2nd May 1991: The Norwegian Frigate "KNM Stavanger" is fired upon as it escorts a Soviet registered fishing vessel across the border. The USSR claims this is a violation of USSR territory and that it will take steps to protect its sovereign territory from further Norwegian incursions. Norway orders partial mobilization and invokes article 4. Seeing this as a provocation, the USSR Claims prior agreements null and void and seeks to readjust its maritime border through force. The North fleet with the 63rd Guards Kirkenneskaya naval infantry brigade sets course for Norway who responds by invoking article 5.

4th May 1991:

The USSR (ORANGE) launch a combined attack on Norway through 2 axis of attacks. 1 motorized infantry division supported by a marine infantry regiment and a parachute regiment as well as special forces will be landed in VÅGSFJORD and deployed at the OFOTEN peninsula in order to neutralize the coastal defense forts. 2 motorized infantry divisions and an armored regiment attacks over land through FINNMARK towards BARDUFOSS.

The sea invasion will focus on securing the central parts off the OFOTEN area and then establish a defensive line south towards VESTFJORDEN. It will then prepare to attack eventual BLUE forces towards BARDUFOSS. The main land invasion is to take the BARDUFOSS area and then aid the amphibious forces attack southwards.

Norwegian military prescence (BLUE) in FINNMARK is limited to a few scattered battalions and can do little more than slow the advancing ORANGE forces.

TIMELINE: At H hour the coastal forts at VÆGSFJORDEN are attacked and soviet parachute forces are deployed at EVENES. At the same time soviet forces cross the NORWEGIAN-SOVIET BORDER. The coastal forts are neutralized at H+24hrs so that the landing can begin at H+36hrs. The advance through finmark is assumed to take 3 days so that the main force reaches the LYNGEN area at H+96.

Initially The Norwegian BRIG N (mech), BRIG 5, BRIG 15, ( motorized) and BRIG 12 (armored) are deploying in these 4 areas. BRIG N are stationed in the LYNGEN area to cover BARDUFOSS, While BRIG 5 is deployed in OFOTEN to cover against the initial landings. BRIG, 15 and BRIG 12 are covering TROMSØ and BARDUFOSS respectively.

At H+96 the UK/NL landing force (UK MARINES) will deploy south of OFOTEN. AMF(L) (NATO mixed mechanized) will deploy at H+144 at BARDUFOSS if this is still held. At H+10 The US 2ND MEF (3 USMC regiments) will deploy. If ORANGE does not complete it's objectives by H+14 it is a mission fail as they will have failed to sucessfully seize the objective before significant BLUE forces arrive.

Initially there will be 2 games, yes. each will have 2 norwegian Mech and 1 MOTOR and . USSR amphib attack will have 1 Airborne, 1 Motor and 1 naval inf. Main USSR attack will have 2 motor and 1 armored.

For the sake of balance USSR will be limited to 1985 units for motorized and armored units (air tab can be 1991 though) and 1991 for airborne and naval inf while norway will be 1991. No prototypes allowed.

That is the initial proposal anyhow. Anyone interested?

All over a maritime border :( Well I guess World Wars have been started for worse reasons.

What would the decks be? I assume this would be divided into two games, one for each axis of attack.

After that I'll do a bit of GMing :)

Also the Norwegian/russian maritime border has been a hot topic for nearly a century. The matter wasn't settled untill 2010.

What would no prototype Norwegians mean? What units would they lose? I can't look right now.

I'd participate either way

I would love to play USSR airborne in this. Although I am not the best of players. Sign me up and if it looks like I am overmatched I will withdraw.
there is a misspelling my username should be wingren013

The idea that all men are created equal is the greatest invention in human history, tied with the Apache Helicopter.

Would you mind taking this young and inexperienced enemy of my homeland under your wing raven?

And don't worry. I'm not the best player myself (as raven can attest to). Hell, if enough people sign up I might just step back and have a purely GM role in the campaign.

Depending on the timing (I can only play weekends and Friday nights) I would be down to play USSR. I'd take the USSR Armor in game 2.
