Community Event: Finishing Off

Postby Tiera » Thu 26 Feb 2015 13:50

Scenario:
viewtopic.php?f=190&t=51158

tl;dr - A huge combined-arms tank battle: If you thought the last FDF game had a lot of T-72s, you haven't seen nothing yet.

The delaying action of Savo Jäeger Brigade failed to stem the tide of the Soviet offensive, and the brigade was decimated as a fighting force. However, it bought time for the FDF to mobilize the main reserves of the Finnish wartime army: the two Armored Brigades.

Info about the FDF Armored Brigades:
Spoiler : :
The OOB strength of early 1990s Finnish Armored Brigade was 5 835 men. It had 63 MBTs and 110 IFVs (60 BMP-1s and 50 BMP-2s). By early 1990s every IFV was armed with a Konkurs ATGM, so by Finnish standards the formation had formidable AT capabilities. Protected from air threats by ITPSV 90 Marksman SPAAGs and XA-180-mounted Crotale NG AA missiles and ItO-86 and -86M (Igla and Igla-N) MANPADS, the formation could operate under the protection of a strong AA umbrella.

Organizationally the main combat units of the brigade were the Armored Battalions, with the following OOB:
HQ Company
Supply Company
Mortar Company with 82 and 120mm mortars
3 Armored Companies of 4x3 tanks (T-72M1 or modernized T-55M Fin)
T-55M Fin 'Matti': http://i.imgur.com/IgSAHwu.jpg
T-72: http://www.kotinet.com/oili.marjamaki-e ... 2M1_10.jpg
3 Panssarijääkäri Companies with 4x4 IFVs

The Armored Brigades were tasked to act as a HQ reserves under the command of a territorial defense district, military command region or a separate Corps. The tasks the formation was intended to carry out included stopping and defeating enemy formations that had breached the lines, protecting key terrain and defeating operational-level air assaults. The brigades were capable of moving 300km on 24 hours and had the capacity to conduct operations on all weather and terrain conditions found within the Finnish borders. The combat strength of the Brigades was deemed strong enough to defeat the assault of a separate Soviet Motorized Rifle Brigade, or to destroy a Soviet Mechanized Rifle Brigade on a meeting engagement.

When conducting an offensive, the Brigade conducted operations by the following steps:
1. Recon and counter-recon: Armored recon, infantry formations and AT assets conducted early recon, and shielded the main formations of the brigade from enemy reconnaissance.
2. Preparations: The main elements of an Armored Battalion begun to move forward supported by indirect fire and engineers.
3. Strike phase: The actual assault with two committed Armored Battalions supported by indirect fire and with a ready-to-commit reserve force of the third Armored Battalion.
4. Continuation of the operation: Supply, committing of reserve and creation of new reserves from the refitted formations that were used in the previous operation.

With Kouvola area and the flank of the defenders of Kymi River line under threat due the defeat of the Savo Jäeger Brigade, the FDF HQ has decided to commit her two Armored Brigades to the battle. The brigades are tasked to move out and defeat the advancing Soviet MRD elements in a meeting engagement battle. Meanwhile the Soviet forces, eager to maintain the fast tempo of their offensive, are tasked to engage and destroy the last remaining operational reserves of the FDF in a decisive battle in order to force the Finns to accept the inevitable and surrender.

Forces:
Finland:
Two FDF Armored Brigades and support elements divided into 3 battlegroups, 2 with T-72M1 Fin and one with modernized T-55M Fin 'Matti' MBTs.

Soviet Union:
Readiness class-C Guards Motorized Rifle Division and support elements consisting of:
BTR Regiment
BMP Regiment
Armored Regiment

Map: Tough Jungle
Game type: Conquest
High Income
Scenario rules: Similar to the previous scenario:
1. No zone capping
2. Only main spawns are active

Game starts with a 10-minute combat recon phase where only recon, artillery and air units are allowed while both sides mass their forces for the actual battle. After that, both sides have 40 minutes to push through to the enemy spawn. If neither side manages to win, it's a tie.

I was 10 minutes too late to the last event :(.

Will this take place at the same time? (as in Sunday at the same time as last event)?

Despite a few timetable cancellations, we had a blast. Regimental-level combat with very high income is indeed Wargame as it is meant to be played.
