Chimera constructor carries 1 infantry

Postby admiralzeech » Wed 30 Mar 2016 23:03

Hah, Spector is a funny guy. First he makes a thread complaining about the US constructor having a gun. Then another about the Cartel constructor being able to fly.

Still, thinking about it, the Chimera constructor is the only one without a gimmick. And someone else once suggested that the Puma could carry 2 infantry without upgrade, because Chimera lacks an early carrier. (but there were worries that it would be too OP).

So, maybe the Chimera constructor could have 1 infantry slot? It might be quite strong in certain situations, but I don't think it would be brokenly OP. And it would mean all factions have a unique gimmick on their constructor.

They actually do have one, and it's quite cool: they can be upgraded to become completely invisible, at which point they also gain a MG for self-defense much like Shredders. In addition, their HP is doubled (from 6 to 12), which makes them far more durable than Shredders.

EDIT: As AndreB pointed out below, Kodiaks actually gain a grenade launcher when upgraded, not an MG!

Its a grenade launcher even.

In before kodiak rush, oh boy the stealth gives X2 damage  , ideas are flowing!!!!!!

But seriously though, the reload is too much to make it a viable combat unit.

Damn, you're right about it being a grenade launcher! I was thinking it was an MG for some reason.

Ah k. But upgrades come a bit too late I think, and USA has an upgrade too.

I think the early game is where constructor wars are most likely to happen.

Maybe keep the stealth as an upgrade, ditch the gun entirely, and add a infantry slot as a base ability?

I'd say it mostly depends on how you spend your money. The upgrade is available in the Research Lab, which only requires a Barracks or Spear Vehicle Bay, and you don't need Shield or Sword to research it, so theoretically you could acquire it well before your Kodiak had even reached the enemy base.

However, the Research Lab costs $2500 and the upgrade costs $2000, so that's a whopping $4500 you'd be dumping on a mere dozer upgrade super early in the game. And that isn't even taking into account the fact that you'd need to spend an extra $1500 on another Kodiak to handle things back at your base while the other one went out to harass the enemy's!

So yeah, although it's a neat strategy to play around with, I doubt it'd be viable in most cases. Also, like AndreB pointed out above, the grenade launcher takes a fairly long time to reload, so even weaker/cheaper vehicles with a higher ROF (like stock Humvees) could defeat armed Kodiaks.
