AoA RE : multiplayer out of sync ( ?! )

Postby craymore » Mon 25 Apr 2016 13:10

Hi,

I've been playing the Reboot Edition since a while and I must say it's very nice 8-)

Now, I don't know if that's a problem that's inherent to this version or if it was present in the Vanilla Edition, but I have played games , over the past few weeks, that went completly out of sync :o

Explanation :

[*] online game appears to be normal at start
[*] at one point in time, something weird happens : the game, as it is, does not appear to be the same for all the players
[*] From player A point of view, his teamates units & buildings will no longer be in sync with player B point of view
[*] This is confirmed by the replays, which are completly different ( from a particular point in time ) to what was experienced by the players

Last time It happened to me was on a 3v3 map :

[*] Teams were completly confused because from the different players p-o-v, the others were playing erraticaly, or not doing anything.
[*] Some buildings were not visible to other players whereas they actually existed
[*] One player even won the game ( from his p-o-v only ! ) and then left somewhere during the game

I don't know if that makes any sense ( from a developper p-o-v ) but it's really scary, and on top of that it creates tensions between teamates ( they started cursing each other because of the way they were seing the others playing ) who don't fully understand what's happening.

I don't know if it's a frequent problem but that should definitely get fixed

;)

This has been known from release. Also people that play Wargame (which uses same engine) say that this problem also exist there.
So with that information now guess what is the chance this is fixed...

Thanks for your answer

I didn't know that problem was present in the original version ( maybe I experienced it but without noticing it ) and I certainly didn't know it's also affecting the Wargame series ( which I don't play ) :o

That would be very weird not to have such problem corrected as it's a major one ( especially for multiplayer oriented games ) :?

Well, you might not have noticed it.

( in other RTS games, when a d-sync happens, the game usually warns all the players who then usually disconnect because the game can't be played as it would )

But here ... you get absolutely no warning and unless you analyse the replay, you could think "well, maybe I was playing with some newbies or whatever".

So maybe it did occur to a lot players but didn't realize it ( who would think that this can happen in a modern RTS ? )

He is true. Sometimes desynch are weird as fuck. You might still see your enemy sending units while this is not true or delayed or whatever. So you might think that everything is fine.

Last time someone insisted heavily on his to leave, and we didn't realize why until very late game, where one of my mate was asking for help while on my side, me and another mate were cleaning the map. We just realized that my mate and the last enemy were doing a 1vs1 while the 6 other players were on the same "other" game  (it was a 4v4).

I've experienced this a few times. Maybe it also has something to do with the latency.

Its rare but not that rare.

You wont notice it if you play with randoms. If you play with friends (same side and/or against) you will notice it easier. Every player have their own games. I have had matches were i win, and my friends on same team as I in same match lose. Games can be totally different and other be much longer than other. Sometimes you win de sync match because your opponents left the game (they won their version of match and disconnect). You can still use in game communications like there is no problems.

As someone said. I faced this thing first time with Wargame european escalation 4 years ago. AoA is 4 th game that have this problem from Eugen. I haven't faced anything like this desync in any other game.

Never had any either (in wargames and AoA), the only reason I can think of is that someone cheated and the anti-cheat created a whole new time-space continuum to lock the cheater in.

Sometimes it happens when the game lags severely.

The only way ive avoided them is instantly quit games that are laggy. 99% of the games where 1 or 2 people lag, there is a very high chance a desync will occur.
