Should Mortars be more POWERFUL than Howitzers?(or nobody notice that)

Postby [HAN]mosquito » Fri 21 Apr 2017 19:24

Let us check the Data.
US 81mm mortar, 10r/m, 10HE, 1200m range, aoe 30m
US 107mm mortar, 9r/m, 16HE, 1600m range, aoe 37m
GRW 120mm mortar, 8r/m, 20HE, 1600m range, aoe 42m

25-PDR, 5r/m, 11HE, 2400m, aoe 32m
HOW 105mm, 4r/m. 15HE, 2400m, aoe 38m
Sk 18(105mm). 4r/m, 15HE, 2400m, aoe 38m

It is well known that howitzers' shells have more gunpowder than mortars'. So they should have more aoe and damage. The power of artillery is depend on not only caliber but also shells' gunpowder. I hope EUGEN would change the data of artillery. Make the mortars less damage thanks.

Probably the only relevant factor at the moment is the caliber...
But i hope that this will be changed...
And furthermore I hope that the acurracy could be easier seen.

mortar shells have more HE filler most of the time...
An us 107mm mortar had around 3,5 kg while a M101 105mm howitzer had around 2 kg of high explosive filler in its shells.
So the HE difference is justified.
Where do you think comes the range from? why would a mortar with nearly the same caliber have so much shorter range IRL ?

Another reason is the fact mortar shells don't need to be thick walled they are traveling at lower velocities than a howitzer shell

120mm mortars tend to have lethality approaching or even exceeding that of 155m howitzers, part of it is HE filler and another is the fragmentation pattern. The mortar bomb approaches at a steeper angle than the shell, creating a far greater spread of fragmentation.

US could qualify for better lethality at some point due to fusing but that's another discussion. There's a reason why the Soviets went full ham with 120mm mortars during the war.

Mortars aren't too powerful, but I do think they're wrong. They currently work as strategic destruction tools: you use them to delete guns. I would prefer it if they were less accurate in return of being cheaper so that they're more accenuated as infantry support weapons.
