Suggestion - Auto targeting for mortars

Postby Tank Hunter » Thu 22 Jun 2017 01:30

Direct fire weapons auto-target as threats appear. You don't need to micro-manage them, AT guns just shoot at tanks, MGs shoot at infantry, etc. You CAN micro-manage them if you wish. You can turn off individual weapons, change targets, etc.

Indirect fire weapons require a lot more micro, and it may be desirable to change this.

I would prefer if my 60mm mortars, if stationary, would automatically FFE on visible targets. If I felt that they were wasting ammo, I could of course turn off the weapon, or move them to somewhere else, or change their target manually. I could manually order smoke rounds to be fired at a location (the AI would be bad at this).

It would be important that they followed a basically sound target priority order. Something like AT guns, HE guns, AA guns, MGs, Infantry, Open top vehicles, other vehicles (or something like that).

I am relatively convinced that one of the main problems with mortars at the moment is their requirement for micro, and their resultant under-use, even when present.

If all mortars did this (including vehicle mounted ones), the question arises whether other indirect artillery should do the same. I am not so sure, I think I manage my larger guns a little better without overburdening my brain.

Is this something that Eugen should look at? Is it potentially moddable?

I dont think this is a good idea. Mortars, especially the high caliber ones (81mm,120mm) are standart equipment in every Division. You can hardly win without them.

They are almost too good. Artillery is the backbone of your Army.

I would hate if i had to switch every Mortar off to prevent auto-fire. They already burn Ammo like crazy and divisions with no Ammo-carrier in Phase A run likely out of rounds before Phase B.

And their micro is not intensive at all. Pack your Mortars on Hotkeys. I normally use Hotkey 4, 5 and 6 for Mortars, from East to West on the Map. Therefore it takes two clicks if your lazy to shoot. 4 Clicks to shoot and relocate: 4, Right-click on Target, Shift+Move command. I dont think this is too much micro at all.

Artillery is definitely not something you want to see fire automatically and reveal its position or empty its ammo on any small threat.

And inevitably friendly fire.

And counterbattery.
