Infantry guns: the verdammt IG 18

Postby sabresandy » Fri 30 Jun 2017 08:23

Am I the only one having trouble dealing with IG 18s in the early game? At 45 points they're concealable, incredibly spammable, reasonably accurate, and fire an HE 9 shell that wipes out infantry, suppresses what's left, and can reliably drive off most light tanks up to and including a Cromwell; they easily outrange machine guns, can batter AT guns into submission without fear of retaliation, are powerful enough to blast infantry out of buildings...and god help you if that IG is paired with a PaK. Later on you can concentrate mortar fire to knock them out but in Phase A this is often impractical, especially if you're playing Commonwealth.

Is there a tactic or combination of tactics in the early game to deal with those that I've been missing? If not, I'd like to suggest, respectfully, a rebalancing of the damned things.

Yes...fire support vehicles...specifically, if you play brits, either the Cromwell CS or Churchill CS. Make sure you get plenty of recce out (as per standard), and pound the little b*ggers into submission, old chap! Taking a CS in your initial force isn't a bad idea either...always try to use them in numbers, and support them with AT gear - guns and tanks.

As Gunman said. To add, smoke is also very efficient, as this guns are dead slow, and are therefore stuck a long time in smoke. You anyway should open with a Mortar all the time, so smoke the little thing. Otherwise use other support weapons, especially armored ones with HE.

And never forget: Do not clump infantry. Never

Smokes are handy I concur.

As for Guards, Canadians and Pols you have 25pds early on; for red devil you got 81mm's and napalm mosquitoes, those are enough firepower to tear down an IG18 or two across the front line. Only for the Scots you might need some armor like assault tanks.

The IG18's are available to infantry divisions, and they paid a price for being static, not only venerable to arty but usually thin-spread, and very slow on the offense. If your opponent spend a lot on them he is likely tied down in one area (and still can be breached with smokes). IG18 is good but perhaps not that broken.

Okay, general consensus on smoke. The 2in carriers should be handy for that; I've mainly been using them for HE support. Time to learn how to smoke.

My main issue with using assault tanks is that that's using a very big and very expensive sledgehammer. At 110 points, and without much armor, they're very high-value assets for the early game, whereas IG 18s are relatively cheap and spammable. I'm sure it'll work, but the disparity in point cost favors the IG 18 pretty heavily. (Then again, I suppose that if there's a defensive area held by PaKs and IGs, I probably should find somewhere else to go.)

The thing about those CS tanks in the brit lineup is they have a 1250m range...that's compared to 1200 for phase B german AT/tanks, and 1000m for phase A german AT guns and most (I think) tanks. Micro'd, it's a money spinner.

1250? I thought 1200, same range as heavy AT and the Sherman 105.

EDIT: also, as Scots, I can report some positive results with 2-inch spam. I forgot you can get four of the little things in phase A, and as short-range vehicle fire support they're pretty good.

Unless it's changed in the last few days, it's 1250...that's the real positive for them.

1000m was the intended range, 800 was a mistake they forgot to fix before the release.
