Baffled by campaign

I would consider myself fairly capable of grasping most game mechanics and UI elements in most games, but my word am I baffled by how auto resolve combat works in the campaign.

The combat value numbers don't seem to add up as expected when looking at the auto resolve results.

An example:
Before battle:
Phase A: Ger = 4, Rus = 1 (Ger 1/1/0/2) (Rus 1/0/0/0)
Phase B: Ger = 4, Rus = 1 (Ger 1/1/0/2) (Rus 1/0/0/0)
Phase C: Ger = 5, Rus = 1 (Ger 1/2/0/2) (Rus 1/0/0/0)

After battle:
Phase A: Ger = 4, Rus = 1 (Ger 1/1/0/2) (Rus 1/0/0/0)
Phase B: Ger = 4, Rus = 1 (Ger 1/1/0/2) (Rus 1/0/0/0)
Phase C: Ger = 5, Rus = 0 (Ger 2/4/0/2) (Rus 0/0/0/0)

It appears as though the Russian has army lost an infantry combat value in phase C but I can't figure out why.

The numbers seem to be even more unpredictable when aerial bombardment or reserves are involved.

Is the any good definitive guide or tutorial on how all the numbers interact? It seems as though all the video tutorials and LPs were recorded on an older UI and I don't find them to really break the numbers down.
