How to use the SU-122-54? by keeping a low profile

Postby x3ckid » Fri 21 Dec 2012 14:39

I just got this tanks, I figured they would be a good deffensive units. But I just stumbled upon the fact they have no turret what-so ever. So how can they be used in a deffensive role, by keeping them in the woods and trying to reppel enemy atackers.

They are very efficient against infantry with their 5 HE, especially when the infantry is hiding in buildings. I use them when I want to seize a city.

In defense, you can use them in the same role as the flamethrowers tanks. Keep them in the rear, and use them only after enemy infantry is out of its APC.

I use them with infantry meatshields. The infantry draws the RPGs with their transports while the SU wipes out the squads.

The good things:
- 5HE, the same as every 155mm shell
- 2/1/1/0 armor profile, more than every APC (except up-armored Marders)
- HMG, imposible to rush against it with infantry
- 15 pts, full vet affordable (I never use it)

The bad things:
- 50Km/h, you have to rely on roads
- No turret, no fire on the move
- 2 AP HEAT

Conclusion

Is a great antipersonel infantry but completly limited against armor (even the lightest ones).

When I use it?
The ultimate anti-rush weapon, can take out rushes of VAB+Chasseurs without losses, also all NATO autocannons are vulnerable. But if the enemy is fielding armored units, maybe you can use "light" tanks like the T-55 or the T-62 since the KE guns are better because of the AP scaling with range. A great deck addition, but situational.

it's a 122mm shell >:(

doesn't BMP-3, BMP-2D and BMP-1D also have 2 frontal?

I find it extremely useful to destroy those annoying special forces

Yeah, but it's 5HE and every 152-155mm artillery ingame is 5HE so it's the same.

doesn't BMP-3, BMP-2D and BMP-1D also have 2 frontal?

I was supposing a PACT vs NATO engagement but you're right.

Another reason for use it only in defense

IMO, even in defense, it needs to be combined with some base T-62s, which btw is another defensive units. The Su-122 can't really destroy any enemy vehicles, but the T-62 is good against APCs, IFVs and some "light" tanks.

I've had bad experiences with base T62s, I might have to try them again.
