How will Jet v. Jet combat work???

Postby Ninja_Niner » Sat 25 Aug 2012 18:30

Im thinking how will jets attack each other? Cause won't it be pretty easy to retreat to off the map or something before the other jet can hurt ya. Also do ya think it will be hard to select enemy jets? or will ya just have to zoom out a lil and do it?

In act of war, fighters has a radar cone ahead of them as they sweep across the map. they will automatically fire missiles at any enemy aircraft in the cone.

Have they confirmed they come via off map and are forced to leave otherwise? It just seems like Fuel management would be a key concept to consider, and that I'll be rather annoyed if I spend some 125 points on like an A-10 or other class bomber just to have it fly away afterwards. I'm thinking it'd be kinda easy to give a new design to the FOB's to incorporate a run way.
I had a tank here once, but it appears to missing....

They will be off map but I think you'll get to use your planes more than once. It'd be real silly to have a tiny little totally out of scale runway right in the middle of a battlefield.

Yeah I suppose looking back it does seem kinda odd... I don't know, I'm sure it's going to work fine. Although It would be awesome to have battles of Sectors that have runways in them, but again they would have to be scaled down.

Maybe after they have come in, ran out of fuel then flown away and got their veterancy or a few kills or whatever, they become available in the tab again to be deployed again after a certain amount of turnaround time.

Perhaps when your selecting which Jet to bring into the battle you have a second flyout menu where you select its combat role .. for example...

Select Mig then flyout menu has (role) ...
Recon
Interdiction
SEAD
S&D
CAS

etc ...

This same principle could be lent to other unit types too!

Wargame isn't known for its 100% accurate scale ;) (True for almost any game, though :D )

And maps in ALB are BIG. Technically they could have to-scale runways if they really wanted them.

Call-in style is the most practical, however it's highly unrealistic, unless the wait time is close to realworld time for a jet to be dispatch, within 50-100km of the battle. When you include the prep-takeoff time (3 minutes by standards), and the time it takes a jet to cover the distance, you're looking at almost 00:10 from the time dispatched.

Otherwise, if it's 30 seconds (to be expected for an arcade game), the strategic aspect of calling an air support/strike is completely gone.

Realisticly, if they added a function - "call in the jets to be in the area", and only enter the theater upon request (20-30 seconds). That way they would still take 5-10 minutes to become available to enter, meanwhile burning less fuel until you actually call them in. Within 20 minutes, their availability would exprie. Although I think that would be too complex.

I just don't want near-instant call in, because that's just not real and gives the player using the air support as too much of an advantage.

Probably just launching missiles/doing a cannon run and leaving. I can't see proper WVR combat happening for some reason. :P
