Anti-Radar Missiles

Postby Temujin » Sat 27 Apr 2013 19:37

Okay so it took me some time to figure out how to use the Jaguar's missiles. They fire against radar based units. So yeah it's very good... But, shouldn't they be able to fire even on unseen units?

They are :) BUT if the SAM turns its weapon off, then the radar is off as well. Thus the SEAD aircraft has nothing to lock on to.

Fly a Jaguar towards an active OSA or KUB. It'll fire and evac automatically despite the SAM not being scouted.

ARM's work by tracking the origin of radar emissions (therefor: Anti Radiation Missiles) and are thus able to home in on the emitter even if its not visible to other units, or has been detected by other recon beforehand.

Really? Last game I was flying around a radar AA I knew was there and I had to wait for it to fire to be revealed and kill it.

He probably had it turned off to make a trap. Toggling it off makes the unit invis to SEAD but unable to fire.

I'll try and let SEAD aircraft fly over me with radar off, then turn it on to launch a missile up their tailpipe

Does the radar automatically goes off when the unit is on the move?

Nope. It has to be toggled still. This creates a really interesting dynamic in multiplayer matches that I'm sure will lead to alot of good times (and fiery crashes) in the future :P

Last night as the Czechs vs French, I had my KUB's in a treeline spotted by the enemy and toggled their radar off to be safe. An enemy Jaguar came in, and attempted to strafe with cannon due to having no missile lock. He immediately was fired on by undetectable Strela 2 infantry, and when he broke off/evac'd I re-toggled the KUB radar, they got a nice KUB missile up their tailpipe with no way to retaliate and went down in flames.

SEAD and counter-SEAD freaking own.

Public games will get very interesting when the game goes live and we have access to quite a few SEAD aircraft. I'm sure a lot of people will get their revenge on the Buk.

Yeah it's almost a mini game inside the game ^^.
What units have those missiles beside the Jaguar for now?

The Jaguar is the only one for now, before the first patch E-Germany had an SEAD aircraft but that one was removed.
Afaik there will be SU-22M, Tornado, F-4G and maybe F-16 Wild Weasle + the existing Jaguar.
There may be more planes unknown to me.
