Ranked Special Olympics mode and the Electronic "Sport"

Postby Nerdfish » Thu 12 Sep 2013 05:04

Eugen might have decided to attract the Electronic sport crowd by making the Conquest mode Ranked.
This is a bad idea.
Wargame can't be popular with that clique and remain a Wargame.
To be a electronic sport, a game must be perfectly predictable and balanced.
Doing so would completely break realism.
Because wars are not predictable, or balanced.

Also keep in mind that "athlete" want their 300 APM to provide them with a decisive advantage.
There are enough games out there about that.
Keep wargame a wargame where we can be armchair generals, not schizophrenic kiddies on red bull.

Wargame won't be an E-sport.

It will, however, be a game that clearly shows preference to a small group of users as opposed to what I would go so far as to say are the majority of their audience.

It might be the only e-sport that is dominated by smart, tactical players not just fast players.

Driving a family car on a racetrack doesnt make it a racecar.

I have my doubts that the wargames will be accepted by e-sport crowd. Most matches take too long to develop and ive seen a few commented matches where the commenter didnt even know what a player had in mind. Its probably too complex for Nintendo kids that expect rock-paper-scissor and basebuilding.

No one is asking you to play in them. If are not good enough to participate in tournaments then that's fine, just stick to kicking people that you know are better than you and your gaming experience will be unchanged.

Meanwhile, me and enohka will be happy to play our favourite game and maybe win some money.

I for one welcome our Electronic sports overlords

I think it will be very fun to participate in these tournaments and I don't really see the argument against it.
If you don't like it don't play it!

You obviously missed the op point completely, like the poster above you. It wasnt about disallowing anyone to play wargame in tournaments, but about.....re-read it yourself, carefully.

believe it or not but I do know the point the op was. But I do not think that this will affect the balance and I do not think that the competitive side of wargame will be the main focus and there for I also think his point is irrelevant
