Time to "kill" the helo infantry spam

Postby Alter » Sun 13 Apr 2014 21:56

Honestly I am getting tired of this %#$%#$, especially in Conquest, its more annoying than the ludicrous 1 point trucks that people use to soak up ATGMs

I honestly feel that transports in this game need to change, perhaps get a mechanic of their own.

Now its just oh well lets spam infantry in 10 point helo transports and if they die, who cares.

Helicopters ARE NOT CHEAP IRL AND NEITHER SHOULD THEY BE in a game that mimics real life combat.

Blackhawk costs 20 million dollars per unit, in comparison, the most up to date tank, like the T90, costs 5 million per unit.

Now i know Wargame doesnt, nor should, represent real life costs in points, but its moronic, and downright broken, how people treat transports.

People dont even TRY to save their transport choppers, a lot of times they are just left to hoover over forests at the front line because hey they have a MG so why not use them.

Prices for transports NEED to go up, plain and simple, at least double, considering their initial huge ingame impact.

I think a simple mechanic + price increase would solve both issues as Wa is focused a lot around unit preservation.

What mechanic, well simple, for all transport i would introduce the "return to base" option.

Simple, you want to make a Helo infantry insertion, you will have to take care of your no so cheap helicopters (by bye banzai massed helo charges) and when you are done, and the helos did what they had to, you can call them back OFF the map and you get a refund in points for saving a valuable military asset.

So lets say you call a blackhawk(50 points) plus infantry squad (10 points), you unload, and you call back, getting back your 50 points.

Same goes for trucks.

Tadaaa problem bloody solved.

It would add an interesting component to the game and would probably make it more realistic too.

This is actually a really good idea which will never see the light of day.

+1 for what it is worth.

im inclined to agree. for what they're worth, transport helis are too cheap. would be better if they were restricted in price and availability to a strategic role.

This won't work because it makes helos useless. A slight price increase to RD numbers (a simple Huey costs 10 points) would work but other than that, not much you can do.

Helo infantry are the primary first-strike units due to speed. Make a ground unit go as fast and you've solved the problem.

I totally agree with the OP. Helos are everywhere and are used in ridiculous roles and way too cheap for what they do.
But as this is so obvious since ALB and nobody did anything about it I assume it's a part of the game Eugen likes.

As long as it's still possible to keep them on the battlefield if we so choose, I think this is a great idea.

But leave the option to keep the transports. I like to use them sometimes to shoot down other transports, unarmed recon choppers, attack infantry outside their range, or tail high-value targets to keep them in sight until the firepower can arrive.

Blackhawk costs 20 million dollars per unit

Today with advanced avionics suite. The '80s plain variant was much, much cheaper...

I you would far more expenisve the choppers the whole game would way more imbalanced because in case of expensve helos all players would play helo hunting with low cost AC... Slight cost increase is acceptable but is funny that you do not complain about SAMs. They are also very expensive in RL...

BTW n+1 times have been explained that RL cost and availability are not considered for WG because of gameplay reasons...

BTW why is so problematic the helo spam? You can see excatly where the troops are unloaded. Do you know what can make a single MLRS and Uragan launch close to min. range distance...? Even in city block eradicate the in.

NATO helos are 100% useless after troop unlading because they do not have any usable weapons, they has no armor and their HPS in many cases only 4-6. Regardless Chinook has 10 HP it is large has no usable weapon. The 25CP cost helos are junk. They are fast and that is all what they has. The BLUEFOR heli spam is faster but REDFOR heli spam is stronger. The TV and MTV helos has armor and the MTV helos has such a strong rocket that can panic even MBTs and kill any other less amored stuff. The unloaded inf. take care the rest.

The BLUEFOR inf. after unload does not have any fire support from helos, about 50% of an inf. cost is a wasted money because they do not have any role after unloading with with Mi-8TV and MTV provide such a strong support as artys...

If I have launched a helicopter insertion I use gunships and light infantry for taking out the armoured and dangerous targets like tanks and AA, transports once they have unloaded their infantry are quite good at mopping up the trucks, APCs and other light vehicles.
Britain doesn't need better SEAD - it has the Challenger 2 for that.

Most of BLUEFOR helos have only machine gun, and in case this gun is Browning it is so lame that are no words on it. Except some French helo there is no firepower on BLEFORE helo and of course no armor at all. The Mi-8TV and MTV rule the sky as multi functional support helo.
