Nvidia Optimus Linux

Postby grahamuk2013 » Sun 1 Sep 2013 21:37

Hi,

I have just downloaded the game from Steam recently but I am unsure how I can launch using the Nvidia card in my laptop. When it launches it seems to be only detecting the Intel display. I have installed Bumblebee and tried using the below to launch.

Code: Select all

optirun steam steam://rungameid/222750
But it still shows in the game that I am using the Intel card.

Here are my system details.

Code: Select all

CPU~Quad core Intel Core i7-3635QM CPU (-HT-MCP-) clocked at Min:1200.000Mhz Max:2400.000Mhz Kernel~3.8.0-29-generic x86_64 Up~26 min Mem~763.3/7689.8MB HDD~1008.2GB(2.6% used) Procs~213 Client~Shell inxi~1.8.4

Code: Select all

Graphics:  Card-1: Intel 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller
           Card-2: NVIDIA GK107M [GeForce GT 640M]
           X.Org: 1.13.3 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1600x900@60.1hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Ivybridge Mobile GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 9.1.3

Thanks,

Graham

Hello,

What is your operating system for your configuration?

Cordially.

Hi Graham,

I suspect your issue to be just a wrong display from our code of the active VGA card.
I suppose you don't have any issue with other games running optimus ?

Could you check that your NVidia card is correctly detected under linux ? (use lspci to check for example)

Also, if you have a way to check it, it would be nice to verify if the game is not already running with your NVidia card (probably by checking GPU temperature through nvidia-settings for example, or some other ways).

Let me know if my assumptions are right.

I ran the game without Optimus run and with and there was no difference in performance or visuals which lead me to beleive that it was not working with the Nvidia card. I have now installed Primusrun and I get much better performance. If it's any use to someone here is what I did. I am using Linux Mint 15.

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia primus

Required for 64 bit versions of linux.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install primus-libs-ia32:i386

When I run the game now it seems much smoother and I am able to turn up the video settings. The code I used to run the Steam game is below.

Code: Select all

primusrun steam steam://rungameid/222750

The below website has more information for anyone having trouble.

Thanks,

Graham

Thanks for your investigation Graham.

It seems weird that optirun does not do the work as said.
Since you find a way to solve your issue, we will lower the priority of this issue on our side.
