The new Abbots

Postby WWWallace71 » Wed 26 Sep 2012 12:03

They are simply perfect. for my play style that is. I havent seen m(any) threads on this topic, so whats the community's thoughts on the new perfect mortar carrier with range? :)

They have higher rate of fire than the 120mm mortar (dispite the listing) but lower accuracy. Don't know if they're better though. One strength of the mortar it lacks is the insane amount of ammo.

IIf I'm correct, they have 144 shots between 4 vehicles (for 40 points, why bother getting anything but 4 of them). and they don't exactly chew through ammo. I had tor resupply them twice I think , and one was for fuel more than ammo (in a 50 minute economy game last night).

I find them good, more range then mortar, mobile, and supply friendly.

They shoot their salvo fast also.

Not overkill but they deserve a look.

Now if Eugen would add the Falcon AAA prototype in the same slot it could be fun.

Yeah, even though they have less ammo they don't waste it (they fire salvos of 6 instead of 10). They're not as accurate as mortars but they can fire farther away.

I can confirm that the Abbot ROF is now faster than the mortar (despite the figures saying otherwise), though I think it's still consistent with the AuF1 (ie slower).

So it's mostly a trade-off between accuracy vs range & weight of fire, and I think at that price it's an interesting one. The AuF1 still rules as an all purpose tube IMO, but the Abbot/Mortar certainly have a place for a more specialised role. For me, I think the decks I have without the AuF1 might switch from Mortars to Abbots, but I'll keep the mortars on my decks with the AuF1.

I might be using mortars poorly, but I consider them a cheap pestering unit on an enemy who refuses to move. If I want to actually damage units plus seriously undermine morale I always feel forced to use the Auf1, but they are so expensive (and rightly so!). At 40 points the Abbot looks like a less accurate mortar, but I'd have to play around and see how the range influences it. If you move the Abbott really close, how does it compare? Something to play around with later today. Though with HE 4 it surely can't be that much better than the HE 4 mortars.

Stunning effect seems to be quite big after DLC. I played only one game with Abbots and used them to stun enemies (tanks, infantry, you name it). They did excellent work - rate of fire is good, they are cheap and they stun everything. I argued to my mates that they can be even better "stunners" than MLRS, but when I think about it, I'm not sure about that. After DLC, also stunning effect for Smerch and MLRS seems to got a big buff. Anyway, I replaced Auf:s to Abbots but not sure anymore was this a good decision - only time will tell.

I really like them. Rapid effect compared to proper tube arty, more accurate than most arty at that range (bar mortars). A little more variation in fall of shot than mortars, so less missing those last two VDV by three yards for six volleys in a row. They're great.
