[DOUBLE NATION PACK: REDS] On new coalitions ...

Postby [EUG]MadMat » Tue 22 Nov 2016 12:35

As you may have learned during the Twitch session yesterday, the upcoming Double Nation Pack: REDS will bring two new REDFOR coalitions to Wargame: Red Dragons, one for each new nation:

Finland + Poland, as BALTIC ALLIANCE. Although there was no actual bilateral military treaty between the two of them, Poland was Finland's closest partner among WP.

Yugoslavia + CSSR, as ___________. Well, naming it is where you might provide some help. We've considered the "Bad Boys of Communism" or "League of Discontented" ... but it didn't sound that good.
Is there any historical background we could use for a realistic name? And please, no over-extended "Treaty of friendship alliance and mutual assistance" ... ;)

The obvious name here would be something like "Panslavia" or the "Panslavic Alliance".

However, I'm partial to "Superslavia".

I might link the Wiki page for the entry on "Pan-Slavism", for those who are uninitiated with the idea.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan-Slavism

I'll briefly further articulate that due to the total lack of a formal military or cultural pact between the two nations, "Panslavic" ideas were their functional, nationalistic, federative ideas. Czechoslovakia was a federal unity of two distinct Slavic groups that had previously been only unified as a polity under the thumb of the Austro-Hungarians. The same is effectively said of the Yugoslavs, a federal unity of distinct Slavic ethnic groups previously only unified under Austro-Hungarians, Ottomans, and briefly, partially, as fiefdoms of the rare Serbian king or two.

When both modern countries were formed under the auspices of their local communist movements (and international backers), "Panslavist" ideals were used to help otherwise distinct ethnic groups coalesce into a national project and unified polity.

Both federations fell apart with the collapse of state-socialism, and the limited Panslavism that helped keep both unified internally, along with it.

That is why I *strongly* claim only "Panslavic Alliance" or whatever variant thereof, is the appropriate term;:the localised variants of that broad ideology are perhaps the only real feature both federative republics shared, thus, likely the sort of ethno-nationalist name that any serious pact between them would have shared. It is a fitting "homage" to the idea to have that word slapped on the SFYR+CSSR coalition.

Tangentially related is the idea of the Balkan Federation, another 19th century supranational idea posited by then-contemporary thinkers as a possible political entity, which was echoed in the 20th century with (failed) attempts to unify Bulgaria and Greece with Yugoslavia into some sort of general union (Greece's anti-communist suppression and Bulgaria's satellite orbit pegged to the USSR killed any possibility of this.)

Alliance is usually a term used for Western alliances (BLUE) so I'd go for BALTIC REDFOR or something like this.

I'd keep away references to nationality given the timeline. I'd go for SOCIALISTS as both country names have Socialist within while others have Popular or Democratic. Another common trait is that both states were Federative Socialists republics (Czechoslovakia was Federal Marxist-Leninist one-party socialist state between 1969–90) so SOCIALISTS FEDS ? SF?
