Unit of the day ...

Postby [EUG]MadMat » Fri 28 Oct 2011 15:53

Hi,

While the Database is still under construction on the Wargame website, I suggest we play a little game …
I’ll post here in this thread, on a regular basis, a unit’s screenshots taken from Wargame (if possible, one that has not yet been displayed in other pictures on the website), and you’ll have, dear community members, to identify it. Once it will be done, I’ll give you its characterstics in Wargame … and then I’ll post another one.

Everybody is ready?
Let’s start with an easy one … :)

I won't be confirming or invalidating any reply right now, giving some time to others to participate before giving the correct answer. ;)

It is indeed the ERC 90 F4 Sagaie. France oblige! ;)

Next pic on Wednesday, for Tuesday is day-off in France (and I won't be there on Monday).

But as promised, some details about today's unit:

The ERC 90 F4 Sagaie (ERC stands for « Engin Roues Canon », while Sagaie is the name of a short spear) is a French reconnaissance armored vehicle, also used in a light tank destroyer role, produced from 1979. It embodies most of the Cold War French army: mobility, accuracy & firepower.
Fast (it can speed up to 95km/h) and stealthy, it can hide in woods or behind a hedge to watch over enemy movements. Equiped with good recon optics, it has a great field of vision, thus spotting the enemy from afar, but also identifying it: this means that not only does it detect the enemy presence, but it can also very quickly assess its type. Two distinct factors in Wargame, which will give the recon units all their worth.
Besides its recon skills, the Sagaie is also used as a light tank destroyer. Armed with a fairly accurate 90mm gun firing just short of 2000m, the Sagaie was designed to be able to engage frontally most of the mid-70’s Warsaw Pact’s MBTs, such as the T-55 or T-62, a feat not common among NATO recon units. But its gun is quickly overpowered by the Warsaw Pact’s next generations of MBTs (T-64, T-72, not even mentioning the T-80), forcing the ERC 90 to get very close, or maneuver on their flanks or rear, for a killing shot.
Even if its main gun can fire HE round to deal with soft targets such as infantry, the Sagaie is also armed with a NF1 7,62mm machine-gun for defense against infantry of helicopters.

However, the Sagaie is not flawless. If it embodies the main qualities of the French army, it also suffers from its most specific drawbacks. Just like most of the French army vehicles, the Sagaie is deprived of stabilizer, which means that, despite being accurate, it only has a chance to hit while stationary. Firing on the move is merely a waste of ammo, but at very close range.
Finally, its armor in Wargame is 1 / 0 / 0 / 0 (respectively front / flanks / rear / top), which means that if its protected up front against splinters and machine-gun bullets, a WarPac riflemen with just an AK-47 will be able to punch holes in its flanks and rear!

A versatile and sly unit, the Sagaie will be a precious addition to anyone knowing how to use it smartly, balancing its qualities and flaws …

This unit will be one I think about including into my deck of units. Seems as though you would have to keep an eye on it and actually micro it.

Can't wait for the next unit of the day.

P.S. this is a great idea.
