Crisis in Crimea

Postby Suriel » Thu 27 Feb 2014 12:01

According to latest news, even as I write this, there are Russian APCs rolling to Sevastopol.
Fighter wings are in a state of alert as well as the navy.

Russian authorities claim that they will act in protection of oppressed Russian citizens living in Crimea.
Looks like we will have Osetia all over again.

Any thoughts?

Only time will tell.

If the Ukraine breaks up - and it looks like it - russia will make sure, that the crimea will remain under its influence.

Russian APCs are not rolling into Sevastopol; they were already there

They are rolling around the city centre and outskirts though

I don't think Russia will react militarily for 3 reasons
1) Putin thinks Ukrainians are 'blood brothers'
2)The armed forces are far more capable than Georgia's
3)They want to keep their international positive perception

The only thing, that Russia really cares, is the navy harbor in Sevastopol. And i am sure, if Putin think he can get away with it, he will start an invasion of the Krim.

The Military of the Ukraine has a lot of stuff, like t 80 and t 64s. But because of the lack of money, i cant belive thats more than half of them are combat ready. Also the navy is a skeleton of the past.

Did he tell you that in person? Really? As if that ever counted in politics. Crimean situation is a bit more interesting now that some people actually want the Crimean Khanate as well  .

The Ukranian office already stated that any movement of Russian military vehicles on Crimean soil will be treated as an act of war. Also, the general consensus here is why invade if we are not sure Crimeans want our help. If they demonstrate their resolve like the Ossetians, then sure, they have a chance of becoming integrated or whatnot.

I don't think the "blood brothers" argument can be that serious.
My impression is that Ukraine is being treated as a part of Russia.

Now consider the fact that over 50% of population there has Russian passports and possible referendum for separation.
Ukrainians will probably react with "hell no" but that will be used as a proof of oppression. Hence we can expect Russia to show all the shiny tanks they have.

It was just a way to show my surprise, as the only thing I know the Crimean Khanate from is Europa Universalis.
The comment just seemed so weirdly out of place. Strange times.

Sevastopols Mayor has just called out all russians to help relieve the siege of sevastopol (what siege?).
