Mig31 and Mig31M aren't competitive: Easy Change

Postby CloakandDagger » Thu 15 May 2014 03:14

So, the Mig31 can't hit anything with it's inaccurate missiles. And even if it does, it won't do much, because it's an SA missile, so by the time it fires another, it's already within minimum range. After that all it has is a piddly gun. Not much use for a 2 availability plane.

The Mig31M has a different problem. It's missiles are decent enough, with more accuracy, rate of fire, and F&F, but that's not much conselation at just one availability, such high cost, and no gun or secondary weapon.

In short, neither plane is worthwhile to pick right now.

I have a simple, realistic, balanced solution:

Mig31

Mig31M

As you notice, the Mig31 has a pair of R40 missiles on its wing pylons, while the Mig31M has four R-77 missiles on its wing pylons.

That's it. Add those to the planes, and the problems are solved.

I think we can agree that the planes suck as they are currently implemented, and a simple, realistic addition of some SRAAMs to the Mig31 and AMRAAMs to the Mig31M will make the planes worth taking. At the same time, the solution is a balanced one. You will have a hard time arguing that either Mig will become overpowered by adding a pair of inaccurate SRAAMs, or that a unit that has only one card of one plane and has no gun will be too powerful with a few AMRAAMs.

So, Eugen, do you think that this proposed solution would make the Mig31 and Mig31M competitive? Forumers, do you think this solution would work?

There is a balancing thread in beta and I believe a suggestion thread as well. Broadly I completely agree and Xeno has this outlined in his Air Realism thread.

Tomcats carry AIM-9s so a realistic combat load shouldnt be much to ask for. Soviets obviously were stupid enough to fly modern interceptors into battle without backup weapons :|

Six LRAAM and 4 MRAAM would make the MiG-31M insanely expensive, lol

But 2 IR R-40s would really make the Mig-31 baseline much more useful & competitive.

As much as I feel for it, that's not what the thread is for.

As long as the Tomcat comes outta the Naval tab, I'm good with R-40's on the MiG-31 :)

Not bad, maybe R-77 would be overkill, R-27? not sure if they can hold it

but i do like the Mig-31 suggestion

R-77s are what they use. Though if anyone could find evidence of the Mig31M with R-27s, I wouldn't be hostile to the idea.

Though, it's not really much of a difference.
