Why did the Devs choose the IL-102 over the Early SU-34 or SU-27IB?

Postby Comrade_Bane » Fri 5 Aug 2016 21:45

Started to wonder this one

If you think about it, the choice to include the IL-102 is kinda ridiculous seeing as:
- The platform is a "prototype" which is more logically covered by the Early SU-34/32
-The IL-102 program was all but canceled by the mid 1980s, with only 2 made.
-The SU-34/27IB was off the ground in the same numbers by 1992 (the supposed cutoff year).
-In a hypothetical situation the SU-34/27IB could have been fast tracked into production, addressing the USSR's needs for a heavy bomber far better than the IL-102.
-It would be the Soviet answer to the F-15D, giving them a platform that could deliver devastating amounts of ordinance really quickly
-The Both Platforms could easily fill the same roll, with the SU-34/27IB filling the roll with a high ECM capability in lieu of the IL-102's armor and utterly useless tail gun.
-The Sukhoi's capacity to hold free fall bombs is actually comparable. In fact the Sukhoi can carry more weight in overall ordinance (10000kg vs 8000 kg)
-The Sukhoi can sport two AAMs along with 12-16 500kg bombs... giving it that "flavor" capacity Eugen seems to be in love with.

Just seemed odd that Eugen chose the IL-102 over the SU-27IB or SU-34

For that matter it is odd that the F-15E is also absent from the game...

Flavour.

I think they just liked the concept of a plane with a rear gun, nevermind North Korea still had the Il-28 in service that would have covered that flavour requirement.

I have never actually seen the rear gun shoot at another airplane.

For the record, I wanted the Su-27IB.

The Su-34 is derived from the Su-27, and it's possible the devs wanted something more unique and radical than another Su-27-alike.
Also, the Il-102 is available in Pre-1985 decks, wheras the Su-34/27IB would not be.

I have never seen it shoot at all... but then again I stopped using it since it seems to be a bullet/missile magnet for pretty much everything, so my experience is limited.

Su-24 Variants can totally and in reality do cover this full scale.

And the Su-24 is already in game, as well; but you were specifically asking about the Su-34/Su27IB.

I recall killing an extremely unlucky mirage 2000 that either overshot the IL or was targeting it's Mig-23 escort. I've also had my a B-5 get the finishing blow on an F-15J that flew across it's fire ark.
